About the South Beach Diet

The South Beach Diet is the delicious, doctor-designed, foolproof plan for fast and healthy weight loss.

Originally created by world-renowned cardiologist, Dr. Arthur Agatston (who practices, teaches, and conducts research in Miami) to combat heart disease, Dr. Agatston observed that following the principles of the South Beach Diet allowed his patients to safely—and easily—lose weight. Pounds didn't just come off—they stayed off, and led to a healthier, more active lifestyle.

Word of his patients' dramatic successes quickly spread, and soon, the South Beach Diet was on fire across Miami. In 2003, Dr. Agatston published the first of his 12 best-selling books. These books became some of the biggest blockbusters in the weight loss world.

The South Beach Diet's unique three-phased approach has revolutionized weight loss.

Phase 1

In this one-week Body Reboot that delivers quick weight loss, you'll dine on gluten-free foods high in lean proteins and healthy fats (like avocado and nuts). With three meals and two snacks per day, the idea is to satisfy your hunger, since nothing undermines weight loss attempts like the sensation of needing more food. For one week (just 7 days!), sugary and starchy foods are off the menu. The purpose of Phase 1 is to reset your body, reduce your cravings for sugar and refined starches, and prepare the body for Phase 2.

Phase 2

In week two, Phase 2 begins—get ready for steady weight loss. As a result of Phase 1, your body will react differently to foods that caused you to be overweight; you will have fewer cravings. During this period, continue eating lean proteins and healthy fats, more vegetables and more good carbs, including fruits and whole grains. Because the principles are simple to follow, you can take your new way of eating out to restaurants, to parties, anywhere life takes you. And as the weight comes off, add some activity to tone and shape your new body. Stay on this phase until you hit your target.

Phase 3

This is the stage that lasts the rest of your life. By this point, you fully understand and easily live the principles of the South Beach Diet. And, you'll have learned the way to maintain a healthy weight without hunger or deprivation and live a life of optimal health.
