120 Pounds Lost!

I turned 60 last June and have struggled with my weight for my entire adult life. Before the South Beach Diet, I was a typical yo-yo dieter, always following the fad du jour. I would lose weight, but eventually my old eating habits would return, and so would the extra pounds.

I even exercised, swimming a few days per week, but that wasn't enough to keep the weight off. When a swimming partner told me that she had lost eight pounds during her first week on the South Beach Diet, I decided to buy the book and give it a try.

This is the first weight-loss plan I've tried that actually taught me to eat and think about food! After studying and learning the basics of the food plan, I figured out how to adapt it to my lifestyle, which was key to my success. For instance, I learned how to prepare a few easy recipes and that helps keep my meals interesting. Also, I prepare a big batch of whatever I'm having for lunch in advance and divide it into individual portions and that saves me time in the morning. To make the program fit seamlessly into my lifestyle, I make only foods that my whole family will enjoy — and with the wide variety of delicious acceptable foods, there are plenty of options!

The South Beach Diet has become a way of life for me — I follow the principles when I dine out and go to parties because I have learned how to select the right foods — good carbs and good fats. For instance, at a Mexican restaurant, I'll have the taco salad without the fried tortilla bowl, and at an Italian restaurant, I request that my scampi be cooked in olive oil instead of butter. I attended a Super Bowl party last year and brought along a nonalcoholic punch and hummus with veggies. I allowed myself to have a bite of some of the other snacks so I wouldn't feel deprived. Two days after that party I had lost another pound!

I began my journey to healthy eating weighing 320 pounds, and now I'm down to 200 pounds. I've lost 12 inches around my waist. After years of yo-yo dieting, I know that I have finally conquered my weight problem and I will be able to maintain this success because I'm not on a diet. The absolute best thing about the South Beach Diet is that I am never hungry. My family is delighted, and my doctor is too. They are so proud of me, and I'm also proud of myself.

Most Effective Strategy
When there is a known temptation approaching (such as a party) you have to plan ahead. For the unexpected temptations, I know that I can have a bite of something without going nuts.
