Unlike the celebrity moms on magazine covers who seem to reclaim their pre-baby figure within a few weeks after giving birth, Christine F.struggled with her weight after her daughter was born six years ago. In fact, she actually continued to gain weight.
“I guess it never really bothered me because I was a stay-at-home mom and told myself it was okay to be heavy,” she says.
But soon the habit of snacking on cheese crackers and pretzels took a toll on Christine’s health. She developed an underactive thyroid, a condition that, if untreated, may raise your cholesterol levels and put you at a higher risk of developing heart disease.
“I ate whatever I wanted and never exercised, and it showed,” Christine recalls. “It seemed like every 6 weeks I was buying bigger-sized jeans. I was up to a size 16 and they were getting tight.”
One day, feeling very unhappy about her weight, she hit a breaking point and decided enough was enough. She wanted to look and feel like the other moms around her who were at a healthy weight. “I woke up one day and said this is the day for change,” Christine says. “I picked up The South Beach Diet, read it, and started following the diet.”
After six months on the South Beach Diet, Christine had lost
a whopping 85 pounds and gone from a size 16-18 to a size 0-2. She also learned
how to become more physically active by doing Zumba. Though this New Jersey mom
isn’t on magazine covers, she’s no longer ashamed to be in pictures now that she's embraced her leaner, healthier figure.
“The biggest reward is that I now allow photos of me to be taken. I regret that my children aren’t going to have any photos of me in them because I was ashamed of the way I looked. But I now can allow photos of me to be taken,” Christine smiles.
Today, Christine weighs 105 pounds, has more energy, and has learned how to turn the diet into a healthy lifestyle. Whether she’s at an elegant five-star restaurant or a fast-food drive thru, Christine is able to make good food choices. When she cooks, she makes healthy substitutions for the foods she loves. Moreover, she exercises at least six days a week.
“I am really happy with the South Beach Diet because it never felt like a diet, not once,” she says. ”I never feel deprived and never feel hungry. I have had many people acknowledge my weight loss and have had several of my friends join the South Beach Diet Online because of my success.”
