Before starting her journey on the South Beach Diet in November 2010, Jennifer faced a number of different health problems. She was overweight, suffered from herniated and slipped discs, and had high blood pressure and cholesterol, as well as ovarian cysts. With a family history of type 2 diabetes, she was also at risk of developing the disease. To top things off, she was diagnosed with Lyme disease in September 2010. But the wake-up call that snapped Jennifer into action happened on a vacation to Aruba when she could hardly fit into her airplane seat and wasn't able to buckle the seat belt. That day, Jennifer made the commitment to quit her bad habits and adopt a healthier way of life.
"I felt like my world was falling apart. I thought to myself, 'I can't be that fat, can I?' But I was, and right then and there, I decided my life had to change," Jennifer says.
As a mother of four children, she wanted to be a model of good health. When her sister-in-law touted her own success at losing weight on the South Beach Diet, Jennifer knew it was the right weight-loss program for her.
"I read up on everything about the South Beach Diet. It made sense and it seemed like a healthy lifestyle change for me, especially with all the health issues I had going on," Jennifer says.
After a year and two months on the South Beach Diet, Jennifer lost a whopping 110 pounds and no longer has high cholesterol or high blood pressure. Today, Jennifer is a much happier and healthier person, and she is teaching her kids the same healthy-eating principles that she's learned from the South Beach Diet lifestyle. She is able to run 5K and 10K races, and she's on her way to running a half marathon. Also as a result, in October 2011, when Jennifer and her husband went on a vacation to Florida, Jennifer experienced instant gratification when she was able to fit into the airplane seat (with some extra room!) and buckle her seat belt just fine.

Most Effective Strategy
"My most-effective strategy for avoiding temptation was to always keep South Beach Diet–friendly food in the house. When I went out, I would carry healthy snacks with me and when I went to parties, I brought South Beach Diet–friendly dishes to share. I had more than 100 pounds to lose and looking at that big number was often very overwhelming, so I set mini goals of ten pounds at a time and incorporated exercise, which helped me stay motivated."
"I have my favorite quote up on my refrigerator: ‘Nothing is impossible! The word itself says I'm possible.’ While on Phase 1, I lost only three pounds, and I was very disappointed, but I didn’t give up. I kept on going. Make small changes and set mini goals throughout your journey, instead of looking at the big picture. This has helped me to remember a slow and steady weight loss wins the race."
