When Shawn’s doctor told him that he would have a heart attack within two years if he didn’t lose weight, this father of two decided to make some major changes in his lifestyle and started on the South Beach Diet. From a starting weight of 290 pounds, Shawn has now reached his goal weight of 215 pounds. Losing weight has paid off in more ways than he could have imagined, not the least of which is that he now has more than enough energy to keep up with his kids! Here is his story:  

”The day that I showed up at my doctor’s office carrying a one-liter soft drink was the day I got serious about losing weight. Until then, I wasn’t really motivated, despite the fact that I weighed 290 pounds and that a walk up a flight of stairs would have me winded and sweating. I’d drift off to sleep from exhaustion throughout the day if I wasn’t doing something. Besides carrying around too much weight, I had sleep apnea, high blood pressure, and Restless Leg Syndrome.”

”That day, my doctor warned me that if I didn’t start getting healthier, I wasn’t going to live much longer. I joked about having a good life insurance policy, at which the doctor interrupted me and told me that if I didn't do something, I would have my first heart attack in less than two years.”

”This was really the first time I knew things were serious. I immediately looked to make some major changes in my lifestyle, including lowering my caloric intake, lowering my soda intake, and changing my snacking behavior. I had heard about South Beach Diet bars and with a promotion that was going on at the local grocery store, I decided to give them a try. I bought a few boxes of the Good to Go Cinnamon-Raisin bars and started eating them either for breakfast or as a snack between lunch and dinner.”

I researched the Internet for different workout strategies for increasing lean muscle, and found that I was “lifting wrong.” After changing up the routines I did and the way that I did them, which involved keeping track of set and rep counts, and rest cycles, I began to see a difference. Now I’m sitting with a physique that rivals anything that I’ve had in my entire life, even better than when I played football in high school.”

”Since that initial conversation with my doctor, I’ve run several “obstacle mud runs,’ including two “Tough Mudder” runs. I also have participated in a sprint triathlon.”

”Since starting the South Beach Diet, I’ve gone from 290 to 215 pounds, I no longer have sleep apnea or Restless Leg Syndrome, and my blood pressure has dropped from 150/115 to 117/78 without any medication. My resting heart rate (again, with no medication) has gone from over 90 to just below 60. But the best part is that I have more energy for my kids. I was so exhausted before that I would try to keep up with them but just couldn’t. Now when we are on the go, I don’t have to worry about pooping out quickly. We go to the beach and ride the waves together, and we play soccer and basketball together without me getting winded. It’s like a new lease on life.”

“I re-learned how to lift for better gains, and now I really enjoy hitting the gym. I’m lifting more weight than I ever did in my life and have a healthier physique than I have ever had.”

“Besides being off my sleep apnea machine and not having to deal with Restless Leg Syndrome every night, I have so much more energy for my kids. I am able to go-go-go with my kids now.”

“The best advice I can give is the hardest to accept. It took a long time to put on the weight and while it will take time to take it off, don’t give up.”
