The Scoop on Sweet Treats

Do you have a sweet tooth? If so, remember that you can enjoy Sweet Treats on all Phases of the South Beach Diet. And, unlike desserts, which you can have occasionally, you can reach for a Sweet Treat or two every day. Feel free to enjoy 75 to 100 calories of our recommended sugar-free Sweet Treats daily. Here’s a complete list of Sweet Treats to satisfy your sweet tooth. Note: If you are on the Gluten Solution Program, read labels on sugar-free candies and gum carefully, since some may contain gluten additives.

Phase 1 Sweet Treats

  • Candies, hard, sugar-free
  • Chocolate powder, no-sugar-added
  • Chocolate syrup, sugar-free
  • Cocoa powder, unsweetened baking type (can also use for cocoa)
  • Drink mix, sugar-free and nutrient-enhanced
  • Fruit pops, frozen, sugar-free
  • Fudge pops, frozen, no-sugar-added
  • Gelatin, sugar-free
  • Gum, sugar-free
  • Jams and jellies, sugar-free
  • Syrups, sugar-free

Phase 2 Sweet Treats

You can enjoy all the Sweet Treats on Phase 1 and the following:

  • Chocolate (1 oz.), bittersweet dark or semisweet dark (at least 70% cacao)
  • Pudding, fat-free, sugar-free (1 serving per day permitted)

A word of caution: Some sugar-free products permitted on the South Beach Diet may be made with sugar alcohols (isomalt, lactitol, mannitol, sorbitol, or xylitol) and may cause gastrointestinal distress in some people if consumed in excessive amounts. Certain individuals are more sensitive to this than others, so take note of your reaction to foods that contain sugar alcohols. The limit on Sweet Treats should help reduce any side effects.
