Week 2: How do you squeeze in exercise with a busy holiday schedule?

If you’re worried about not having enough time for regular workouts during the holidays, there are simple ways to incorporate small workouts throughout the day. Squeeze in a short interval walking routine while Christmas shopping by striding around the entire mall for an extra 20 minutes. Or set your alarm 20 minutes earlier in the morning and do some core-strengthening moves. Let us know how you squeeze in exercise during this busy time of year and how you stay motivated.

I schedule my exercise as a priority and work everything else around that. I have noticed the first time I make it less of a priority it just never seems to happen again!
This holiday season my exercise is going to come FIRST!!!

This is going to be the real challenge for me. I seem to get so busy and never make time for myself during the holidays.  But this year will be different.  I will make exercise a priority.  I am planning a geocaching excursion on Thanksgiving Day for the family so we will not sit in front of the t.v. but will get outside, do some hiking, and maybe find some treasure. It will be fun, make some great memories, and add exercise to what is normally a pretty sedentary day.

Richard and SB Challenge Buddies.

Getting in my exercise is a challenge during the holidays for sure.  My hope is to set up a schedule in which I get up early in the morning and do my half hour of pilates or treadmill.  That way I have my exercise in for the day and if I have time to do another session of pilates, treadmill, gazelle, or walk in the evening...it would be a bonus.  I have found that exercise if the key to keeping my weight off and it also helps make me feel physically better also.  Keeping stress at bay is an important key in maintaining a positive attitude towards weight loss and reaching my goals.  Exercising makes me feel good about myself and that will help to keep the holiday stress at bay.
If I can't get in the exercise for a day, then I will continue to take the stairs, walk from classroom to classroom with a quick pace, park farther out in the parking lot to go to the store, and other little steps that keep me active.  I will continue to try and walk dogs from the Humane Society until the weather gets too cold or nasty.  I was even thinking about learning to use cross country skis so that I could still try to walk the dogs when the snow packs down.  Any advice from anyone who knows cross country skiing?  I have a few weeks before the good snow starts and I need help getting physically ready to try this new adventure.  I'm feeling stronger than I have in many years, so I would like to learn a new winter sport besides just indoors exercise options.

When I don't have time for my regular exercise I do things like park farther from the building I'm headed to and walk faster going to and from the car - taking the stairs instead of the elevator -- carrying the groceries to the car if I only have a sack or two instead of having them carried for me or rolling them out in a cart.  Just little things that by themselves don't do much but all added together helps.

During the holidays, getting in my exercise on a regular basis is priority more than ever.  I seem to start to slip in a lot of other areas of my healthy lifestyle  with SBD when I do not get in the scheduled weekly amount of exercise I have planned to do.  I have a set amount of miles I challenge myself to walk each week and continuing to challenge myself to get in my set goal miles throughout the week is a great way to make sure I am exercising like I should be.  I do not let a busy schedule interrupt my exercise plans  It takes a lot of planning all year to work in eating healthy and getting in our exercise.  The holidays are no exception to this rule for me.

I keep an exercise ticker to enter my miles walked each week.  I have a goal of reaching 200 miles by New Year's.  I am really working hard to make this goal now so I am more motivated not to skip my walk and an added incentive is to walk an extra day per week to get in the extra miles I am going to need to get to my end of year goal.  I keep the exercise ticker on Facebook and update it each week.  I always look forward to making that ticker's miles go up each week.  And I know my friend are watching me too.  A little more accountability.

Are you walking to meet us in NYC for New Years?  I got there last month and am just hanging around with Candy just waiting for others to join us.  Good luck.

Thanks for sharing your thoughts on sticking with Phase three during the holidays.  Since I've been back from China I've remained at my low wt range and feel pretty comfortable going into Thanksgiving.  But, I know that I can't become too comfortable, as this would not work too wellfor me in the long run.

Happy Thanksgiving to you.

It's simple things: this week, I climbed the stairs in the airport garage instead of taking the elevator when I went to pick up my son last night, I dance when I folding my clothes, I keep the dog food container in the basement even though his dish is in the kitchen so I have to go down a flight of stairs to get his food.  If I need to talk to someone in my office, I get up from my chair and go talk to them in person, when I went shopping on the weekend I parked on the other side of our village from the shops. I use the SBD Supercharged video!

With four children I have a problem fitting exercise in.  The main way that I do it is by fitting eexercise in my daily activities.  For example, I reached dinner yesterday and had not execised, so I marched in place in the kitchen, using the interval method (marching faster in place) to get my heart rate up while cooking.  Granted it was not totally dedicated to just exercise, and I had to stop occasionally to take care of dinner. I also do this while doing laundry or cleaning Other things I do are taking the kids for walks, mall walking (the kids love the interval fast and slow).

We each are walking the miles from our houses to NYC.  I think mine was 282 miles.  I like the virtual walking because it helps me put a visual to my walking goals.

Well I guess I need to say I am thinking of trying the new sport of cross country skiing this winter.  I think I might rent skis first to see if it is the exercise for me.  I am certainly less than graceful on down hill skis, as I have tried that before ;o)  Have a wonderful holiday.  You must be so proud going into this holiday season at your goal weight.  You will do wonderful at keeping beachy.

How creative!   I will remember this advice when I get whining that I just don't have time to fit in some exercise.  My girls are grown and on their own so I only have to worry about myself when getting dinner around during the week so now after reading your post....no more excuses for me...if you can fit it in with your busy lifestyle then so can I!

Hey Deb, I doubt I can make it that far by New Year's but I will just keep my ticker going I have on Facebook and I think the amount is pretty close to what NYC would be for me from WV.  I will just break out in a run on New Year's Eve to catch you guys there in NYC on time

We can still celebrate the New Year on SBD together if I run run run........

Hugs, Tami

That's the nice thing about virtual walking.  You can be walking in different directions and starte whenever you want no matter the weather.

I always park a couple of levels higher than I need to in the parking structure at work, and always take the stairs rather than the elevator.  When I'm traveling between floors at work I take the stairs as well.  Plus parking as far from the shops as I can at the mall - it all helps!

These last few days with both DH and I being off work we're riding our bikes together - leisurely rides along the beach, a good fat-burning pace - giving us the double whammy of burning off the turkey and having some good "together time" in the fresh air.

As far as "regular" exercise is concerned - I'm trying stick to my regular schedule of running or yoga 6 days a week... "treat it like cleaning your teeth" is my philosophy.. make it feel skanky if you don't do it!

I know I have to fit in exercise and belong to 2 different walking groups on these boards.  They do help me feel accountable for just doing it.  You need to make it a priority in your mind.  I walk but whatever exercise that you do not only helps you with your weight loss but help your soul also.  Once you realize that stress and can be eleviated and you will think much clearer it's almost a no brainer.  I do realize that this is the time of year when we are most busy, but think that if we keep up our normal routine and our normal way of eating it will greatly help us reach our SB goals.  Exercise HAS to be part of the big picture and I love all of the suggestions for fitting it in everyone has made.  Just do it!!!

Your tips reminded me of me - I work in a classroom and I enjoy pilates and the gazelle. My dad died at Thanksgiving and now my mom has Parkinson's with dementia and is not doing at all well. The only sister I have left is helping me with our mother, but she discovered last week that she has breast cancer, so I am fighting depression big time. I refuse to return to food for comfort and am determined to keep off the weight that I have lost plus I want to get the scale moving downward again. My mom refused to be tested for Type II diabetes and
had the disease for years before she started treatment, so I know how important diet and
exercise are. She was not very overweight and always "busy", but no time for herself. Reading your plan has helped me set some goals for myself. I just came to the computer from 40 minutes on my gazelle.  I have a Nordic track also, and if we lived closer, I would loan it to you so that you could get in shape for the snow. We don't get very much here in NC. I am interested in volunteering for the humane society, so it seems we have things in common. Your weight loss is very impressive.  We have the same goal, but I have more to lose than you.  I would LOVE to weigh 159.  I hope you have a SB successful holiday.  Looking forward to reading more of your posts.
