Week 5: What is your favorite South Beach Diet-friendly alcoholic beverage?

In addition to decadent desserts and hearty holiday meals, alcoholic drinks can be a temptation during the holiday party season. If you’re on Phase 1, alcohol is off-limits and if you’re on Phase 2, you can enjoy an occasional drink, such as light beer or a glass of wine. Try to limit it to one per party and follow up with glasses of water or seltzer to keep you feeling hydrated and full. Another option: Try a virgin cocktail like the South Beach Diet Mojito. Post your favorite holiday “mocktail” recipes here, and let us know your tricks for drinking at holiday parties.

OK so this is a tricky one, because I will generally have one relatively sensible "real" drink vs a "mocktail" (eg bacardi and diet coke).

If I was going to have a mocktail it would be a blended virgin margarita - skip the simple syrup, instead use frozen berries, fresh squeezed lime juice (lots) and ice.  Whizz it in the blender and ta-dah.  My favorite combination right now is frozen rasberries and blackberries, and freshly homemade pomegranate juice.

Granted its not much of a cold weather drink, but I live in Southern California, so I'm not much of a cold weather person, either!

Good Morning.

Oh boy, cocktail hour! Now you're talking!  LOL

I tend to sip white wine or champagne.  But for a mocktail, I love a lovely "Virgin Mary".  I use v-8 or Knudsen's very veggie, season with a little worchestershire sauce, salt, pepper, celery seed, tobasco, lemon juice and a pickled asparagus with a little pickle juice thrown in.  Healthy and folks think you're having a drink.

At parties, I volunteer to be the designated driver and then stick with soda water with a twist of lime.

I am in Phase II and I enjoy the light beer when out socializing and try to limit the amount of of alcoholic drinks I am consuming by drinking lots of water in between.  The alcoholic beverages tend to cause fluid retention for me and I will retain fluid really easily when I do enjoy these types of beverages so I am always aware when the scale should go up after a holiday gathering and I have enjoyed a light beer or two.  Drinking lots of water and not over doing these types of beverages is the key for me to controlling my weight gain over the holidays.

I do like to have a celebratory drink once in awhile with my husband or friends.  I am not a big drinker though so I don't miss them too much.  My daughter made the South Beach Mojitos the summer I started South Beach and they were great!  I live in the Finger Lakes wine region of New York State so good wines are a plenty.  What I have done since being on South Beach is train my palate from the sweeter white wines to some of the delicious semi sweet or drier red wines for the healthier tannins.  Also I tend to sip the reds a little slower and one or two glasses are plenty for me.  The variety is plentiful out here so I am good.
What I want to try is the Spiced Cocoa Eggnog recipe that is in the South Beach Diet Parties & Holidays Cookbook.  I do find I really miss the eggnog over the holidays.  I never really needed the rum in it anyway so the rum extract will be just fine.  This is good for Phase 1 too!  Plus you can never go wrong with putting Cocoa in just about anything.  Frothy, rich, and chocolatey....yummm!

My Favorite SBD friendly alcoholic beverage is easy. I rarely drink anyway, but for the holidays I like to either take the one 4 oz glass of dry red wine and mix it with plain unsweetened seltzer. It is not sweet at all but allows the wine to go much farther.  Once you get used to the fizz without the sweet it is an amazing drink.

I also love virgin bloody marys.   Double up on the celery and the hot sauce and no one knows the difference.  (I also love lemon juice so that helps).
