Welcome to the South Beach Diet 2010 New Year’s Challenge — a special 100-day community event designed to help you jump start your weight loss, improve your health, stay motivated, and reach your goals — as well as the chance to receive fabulous prizes, including a trip to sunny Miami Beach to meet Dr. Agatston and his team! To register, you must complete this registration form and read the official rules.

What Do You Get?

Round the clock support: Starting Monday, January 4, South Beach Diet Group Leaders will offer you around-the-clock advice and support in our special New Year’s Challenge Message Board. You’ll also get motivational tips from other members, plus the option to attend weekly group meetings with topics and assignments to help you stay on track and learn the ins and outs of the diet.

Weekly group meetings: The meetings will be held in the New Year’s Challenge Message Board every Monday at 12:00 pm EST and every Friday at 3:00 pm EST. These 30-minute chats will be hosted by special guest speakers including successful South Beach Diet members, our online nutritionists, Marie Almon, nutrition director for South Beach Cardiology, and Dr. Arthur Agatston, creator of the South Beach Diet. Topics will include recipe makeovers, dining out strategies, how to conquer cravings, and much more! Group meetings are optional, but participants must attend one of these weekly meetings each week (for a total of at least 12 meetings during the course of the 14-week Challenge) in order to qualify for the grand prize.

How Can You Win?

Lose weight and feel great! In addition to attending the weekly group meetings, you’re encouraged to post as often as you can throughout the Challenge with your questions, concerns, tips, and updates on your progress, as the quantity and quality of your posts will be considered by our judges. Valued and active participants will be awarded badges during the course of the Challenge by the Group Leaders, though acquiring badges isn’t an official requirement for winning the Challenge. You will also be asked to submit before and after photos, as well as a 500-word essay about your weight-loss experience at the completion of the New Year’s Challenge. The Challenge will run 100 days, ending on or about April 10, 2010. Winners will be notified some time in May 2010. Here’s a look at the exciting prizes:

  • One grand prize winner will receive an all-expense paid three-day/two-night trip to Miami, Florida, for a private consultation with The South Beach Diet Supercharged author Arthur Agatston, M.D. The Grand Prize Winner will also receive a nutritional evaluation with Marie Almon, M.S., R.D., L.D., South Beach Cardiology Clinic Director of Nutrition.

  • Two runners-up will receive a three-month subscription to the South Beach Diet Online, a three-month subscription to the South Beach Diet Dietitian Coaching, and a collection of South Beach Diet books.

  • All members who complete the Challenge will receive a FREE month of online membership. So everyone’s a winner!

12 am Monday and 3 pm Friday????? I am working both of those times so how are working people supposed to attend those times.  I will look more at the challenge to get my answer and hope that I read something too quickly.  If those meetings are mandatory to participate then there should be an evening time for those of us that work. Happy New Year.

The meeting sound like a great idea- but you did not think about our work schedules.  Some of us do not have computer access at work for personal use.
You have disqualified many of us before we even started the challange.
I think you should re-think your rules.

I would love to join the challenge, but the times you have chosen coinside with my work schedule. I am a teacher, and there is no way I can do these times! You need to have something later in the p.m. Many of us are working during these hours! Ugh!

I agree with all of the above. Us working folk may have conflicts and I think most of the folks on this site work.  While I often have access during my work day, work must always take a priority.  Help!

What happened that Arizona residents can't participate this year?  Please add an additional time for working people but keep the daytime one too because some of us with young kids do not have an evening time available for watching.

Oh Richard:
I too must protest those times for the online meetings.  It seems they were set up for you people working at SBD, not those of us working, participating and paying for our SBD experience.

I am a nurse and work night shift, neither of those days or times work for me.  How about adding something early in the morning and  later in the evening and one on a weekend.  What about those people in countries other than the US that want to join in?? They are on a different time schedule too!

I agree. You seem to have eliminated a whole bunch of us before the challenge has even begun.  Please reconsider!!

This may be my second posting as my first one seemed to disappear.

What I would like to say is I agree with every posting that has protested the meeting times,  You need to add an evening meeting time for those of us that work in order to make this challenge user friendly and fair to all.  Thank you!!!

I have to agree with everyone's opinions regarding the meeting times. I am at work during both of those times, but am still very interested in this challenge. I would hate to have to miss out because of these 2 proposed meeting times. Either an evening or weekend time would work best for most people I wuld have to think.

Please be considerate of those of us who cannot meet during the daytime.  I'm in the Pacific Time Zone and your scheduled and mandatory meeting times simply do not work!  Please have one about 9 PM ET, which would be 6 PM PT if done during the workweek and have another on a weekend but not during Sunday morning for anyone in the US.  Joan

Richard, as of now, the only place I see to post or change a photo is in "My Public Profile". Is there a link to a place to post a before and after photo for the Challenge?

Thanks to anyone who can answer.

I am a little confused. I thought that pacific time was a three hour difference from eastern. so Mondays meeting would be at 3pm and fridays meeting would be at 6pm for me since I live in Fresno California.

I appear to be the only one excited about and not complaining about the times.  I am looking forward to the first meeting and have registered for the session today.  Is it necessary to register for each noon meeting?

Lupe2010,
Pacific time is a three hour difference but it is three hours behind so a 12 pm meeting on the eastern coast would a 9am meeting for you.  A three pm meeting would be a 12 pm meeting for you.  Hope this helps.
