Exercising, ugh! baby steps?

Okay i am having a real challenges on motivation to exercising. However, i just finished reading one of David Ramsey's book on financial freedom. As i was reading it, he has a lot of techniques that i thought i could apply to weight loss. He repeats about being careful about treating just the symptoms. So is my weight the symptom? No, it must be the food i eat and the lack of exercise, Whew im glad i got that out of the way. Okay so being part of this group (SBD club) i have learned what foods have made be fat, what foods caused my cravings (that was a real break through for me) and what foods i can eat to make me healthier and how much of it i can have, and the horrible effects of SUGAR! So I fixed (sort of) that part of my eating habits, work in progress. Exercising for me is like climbing this HUGE vertical, slick wall. So how do i overcome that? As i search for answers, sometimes I feel like i am slowly chipping away that wall as a read your inspirational and motivational posts, but i know that i will to have to get busy and do the rest. (I feel like a kid sometimes kicking the dirt).

One of the posts made was an encouragement to starting with floor exercises. So using Ramsey's baby step techniques (fyi-not trying to sell Ramsey's stuff just trying to use it to my benefits) and the post from a very encouraging person out there, i will set a goal to stretching out my tired ole' limbs daily, every morning for one week. Maybe they wont be so tired after a week of stretching.

Baby steps....

i know that getting the exercise in is the thing that has really made a difference in my weight loss. I can not do much because the doctor wants me to keep my heart rate below 110 but I do walk every day and try to do at least an hour a day of walking. I started out doing 10 minutes at a time then walking 10 minutes out and 10 minutes back- Now I am walking around 10 miles most days. I don't walk fast only 20 minute miles, but I know on the days I don't get my long walks ( like today because of the rain) I really miss it! Baby steps are the way to go- just take it easy but be consistant and it will become a habit you won't want to miss

Yeah baby steps,
nice aplication of the financial advice to dieting - it definitely applies.
Studies have shown that even light exercise such as walking yields significant results.  Try to ddo something everyday.  If inactivity is the root problem then exercise should help alleviate the symptoms of excess weight.  goodluck!

You are so correct on doing something is better than doing nothing. This week has been very tiring for me as I was ending my 3 week vacation with the last week at home. Sooooooo, i had to take care of the horses, sheep and dogs which was really tiring. Because of the heat i was out playing in the water with the horses and the dogs, (the sheep dont care too much for getting wet), but that was a real chore. I am giong to join a gym today and hopefully that will inspire me to get with it. I've joined gyms before and its all turned out to be a waste of money for me. But i do feel somewhat motivated, whats the saying, if you first dont succeed, try try again?

Thank you for motivation. Oh by the way i did go and walk for 10 minutes daily for the past 3 days which i plan to continue. Also i am going to sign up for a 5K walk/run coming up.

Hope all is well.....

Holy smokes, 10 miles a day? Just reading that makes me pant (lol). That is great. I would like to achieve that some day. I have high hopes for me as I try to get that "getty" back into my step. At one point in my life i was training for a marathon. I got up to running 12 miles a day, 3 x's a week, i still look back on those days and think how the heck did i do that? It was baby steps that got me to the 12 mile runs, it was my friend who got me to the training days, but-a...I never did run that marathon though, my friend broke her ankle during the training and that was it for me. I tried to keep training but it was really tough doing it alone. We had to train in a different town so it was easier to find something else to do. Aah, such is life.

Great job on the 10, i will do my best to get there....thanks.

You can do it, starting small is what I'm doing too. I should say re-starting. I actually really like exercize and going to the gym, but have kind of viewed it as a "luxury" because my daughter has had major health problems. I keep telling myself that I need to be healthy to take care of her and the rest of the family, but it is tough to really get that 100%. Today I went for a walk for an hour - with no cell phone - and it was really nice. Just me, myself and I.

That is a great perspective.  Another reason is to be able to take care of my aging parents. They used to be very vibrant, healthy, and always seemed to have a lot of energy. They are still vibrant but now they have to watch everything which is making me watch everything, i.e. cholestoral (sp?), sodium intake and for my mom, osteoporosis. Watching their health change because of age is kicking me in the pants to do something about me now. They didnt exercise when they could.

I start my routine at the gym tomorrow, i am kinda looking forward to it. I've been walking taking those baby steps, and i talked to my personal trainer who says he agrees on the baby steps because he has seen too many people quit because the first day they overdue the exercise and never continue.

So how often do you get to the gym? I thought about starting out 2 or 3 days a week.

I used to go both Saturday and Sunday for about 2 hours. Saturday was a tradtional upper and lower body strength day plus 45 min to 1 hour of cardio. Sunday I took a 1 hour yoga class plus 1 hour elliptical. During the week I usually would go for an hour mini strength routine and a 1/2 hour cardio. During the week I sometimes would meet friends there. I have a friend who got me to try spinning and I found it really hard. My gym membership is expired and I'm working on at home routines right now.

Candy:

Thanks for your input. I know that the days I don't walk my dog - my weight loss slows. I keep yelling at myself for not doing a lot more. Because I am blessed to be able to - I should get off my ____ and do it.But, like "color-me-happy' - I have this mental block and she couldn't have said it better - like a child kicking the sand!!

I would love to get a graph like yours to hold me accountable. How did you do that?

Good luck - keep up the great work! And thank you for the motivation!

HI there! Tried to reply through buddies - it wouldn't let me! Exercise is still proving to be my block! I do walk the dog almost everyday - but not everyday and notice a difference in my weight loss when I don't. I have an elliptical, treadmill, weights, band, bousu ball, and enough videos to supply most of Colorado - but do you think I use them!?!?!? NOOOOO! I totally related to you statement about feeling like a kid kicking the sand. I have to - and want to get going on the exercise but I wake up in the morning and am so tired - (I having trouble sleeping) that I just can't get going. Then I come home from work and am exhausted. EXCUSES I know - I just have to do it!! Keep the motivation coming and remember - we can do this! You are finding creative and workable ways for you. Now I must do the same!

I want September to be our "BLOW-OUT" month!

I entered it in the My preferences section under the signature area. I did the table in the wysiwyg. I don't know how you get there from this site but from the other boards you can find it by clicking on my preferences at the bottom of all the posts or the top of the board page. I am not too familiar with these new pages because they are different from the usual message boards sorry I couldn't be clearer

Taking care of the horse, dogs and sheep also sounds like quite alot of physical activity.  Good for you on giving the gym another shot.  Though many of the exercises can be done at home I find the gym environment stimulating.  Listen to your body at first and start lightly to avoid injuries that could derail your progress.  And good luck with the 5K.

I guess i was getting exercise by taking care of all the animals, i lost a little bit more even while i cheated on pizza. So i am feeling pretty good. Started the gym, that worked out well. Not committing to going every night, but I am prepared incase i want to stop by. So what about you? Exercising? Hiking?

Howdy there, that is exactly how i felt about exercising too. I had so many excuses on why i couldnt go today. Well yesterday, on my way home which is where i thought i wanted to go, i ended up at the gym. I worked out for 34 minutes on an elliptical machine and left very invigorated. So this morning, I packed my gym bag, my husband asked if i was coming straight home after work and i said dont know, i may stop at the gym. So if I challenge all those excuses on why i cant go to the gym and i win, i'll be ready. Baby steps. I like what one reply to me said, take care of your health now and be glad we are healthy enough to be able to go to the gym. She is right you know.

You are SO right about baby steps ~ which for me started with infantile rolling over in bed and stretching too.

Had a bad back injury (like there are good injuries?) and it has taken me until the past 2 months -- and loosing weight -- to be back in a position where I can sit-up on a chair and work at a DESK!  THos core muscles will respond to daily stretches and walking 10 and 10 is the WAY to do it!

And I LOVE your handle! Color your world!

I am so sorry to hear of your back injury. My mom had back surgery recently, she is in sooo much pain. I feel so bad for her.I am glad to hear you are starting to get a little agile (sounds like). I will definitely continue the baby steps.

Thanks.

Sorry for the delayed response but wanted to say GOOD FOR YOU on applying Dave Ramsey to your weight loss efforts - sounds like you are trying to get your whole life "in order".  Also know that there could be other reasons for your weight and lack of exercise - the weight is the symptom which is caused by over eating or not eating the good stuff.  I know for me, the weight is often a symptom of how I feel about myself - I am a big stress eater and when I am sad, angry or disappointed then I eat the bad stuff.  This causes me to gain more weight and then I am more angry, sad, etc.  So, underneath, I need to deal with some emotional issues so that I can stop the cycle... I hope that this makes sense.

I did read the rest of your posts and it seems that you are doing a great job with the workouts but also don't underestimate how much of a workout you are getting with taking care of the animals - especially swimming and playing in the water with them!

You GO GIRL.
take care,
stacy

You know, i 've known that listening to all the information about weight gain that most doctors, clinicians, etc say that over eating is due to stress, emotional eating and all of that garbage. I have tried for years to come up with reasons why i over eat and the only reason i can come up with is that i just love food. I have gone back into my childhood history looking for some dark deep reason why I like to have popcorn with a movie or eat the salsa and chips at a mexican resturant and i cant seem to find that dark secret out there. I love to bake, i love candy, i love a good mexican meal, and i am quite tired of trying to convince myself that something must be wrong with me because i like certain foods. I can tell you this, since being on SBD, i have no more cravings. In fact I am not even hungry most days and have to force myself to eat. So just by learning how my body reacts to certain foods has helped me decide what i want to eat. I have taken fit classes for years but nobody ever really taught me that my body will react to different combinations of food until SBD. Now i know that I am not special with this and there are those who do eat for comfort, but i bet if they also tried SBD and really read about the diet and learn about how the foods work together, it would certainly be a feather in their cap, nothing can replace education. What we choose to do with it now is a different matter. Oh and one more thing, obesity runs in my family and it is hereditary. Could it be that my weight is a sympton of my family history?????????????? Guess what, I am breaking tradition. Yahoooooooooooo!

Hope all is well,

btw, i am fine. Dave Ramsey is a christain like myself and i like what he has to say about financial investing. Check him out, he is really good.
