My wellness goals come in 2 packages, physical wellness and emotional wellness. I am at 193 lb and 5' and 5 1/2". I have been on the beach for about a month, but the holidays took me off the plan and I just tried not to overeat. I want to get down to 140 lb and be able to look like I used to do, but I also need my back to heal and stopping me from exercising. Emotionally, I have given up compulsive eating, now I need to get my depression under control.

Wow, we are two peas in a pod.  I'm 190-something and want to get back down to 140-something.  And you're right... taking account for both physical and mental/emotional wellness is the ticket.  Sounds like you need to give yourself lots of kudos for getting this far.  Give your back some rest and ease into your new plan.  The time you invest in yourself will pay great dividends!

Thanks! I found out my back problem is actually in my hips, so exercise is helping.
Now that the New Year is here, I want to go back to Phase 1 to overcome holiday eating and then resume Phase 2. This time with better results, I hope. I want this to become permanent, and I just bought 2 used South Beach Diet Cookbooks, so I have lots of interesting food to eat.
Happy New Year!

Good for you!  I'm hoping to put my SBD cookbooks to better use during the challenge.  And to better understand ways to adopt other recipes to make them SBD friendly.  And I'm with ya, going to P1 for a kickstart back into the plan is a good idea.  I'll do the same thing starting with the challenge date.  This coming week I'll be traveling for work (still Bowl Week too) and it's never a good idea to try to start any new thing when that happens.  Better to get it going at home first.  I like to set a small goal - nothing too dramatic.  I build confidence and momentum best that way.

If you are interested there is an exercise and fitness message board with lots of support and inpiring people there.  Just go to the exercise and fitness board and click on the January thread. We love new members to join us and it has helped me stay focused and set and obtain fitness goals.  We also discuss SBD friendly foods there too.  Look forward to talking with you again.

Thanks. I find these interest groups difficult to get in on. I don't know what is out there because the list of groups is enormous! But, I will check out the health and fitness board. I do need to exercise, just so I can be comfortable!

Hi
I set my goals in steps-and to be accountable so you are my team to check in with yeah!

in 2008 I trained for a marathon and I learned to start with achievable goals, up them by about 10% a week and make sure to get plenty of rest when you body tells you it needs it.

We had a number of life changes the past 2 years and I am looking forward to starting the New Year with these challanges.

Right now I am going to start with 15 to 20 minutes of walking- if the weather is bad I have walking tapes that I use so  no excuses!

My new goal is to start walking at lunch since planning them time has been a obstacle with a hectic work schedule.

Thanks!

every day, I just get up and try to do my best. Goals make me feel inadequate, probably because of too many or to high.
Just when i was diagnosied with celiac disease, I started all over, then I broke my arm biking, and started all over, then there was the surgery and now an abscessed tooth. So one step forward two back and off we go again.
The alternative is to give up - NEVER. Lulu

I was misdiagnosed with Celiac's about eight years ago - then we figured out that I didn't actually have it... However, I was on the diet for about four years.  I have tons of recipes including a great chocolate cake recipe that is totally South Beach Diet friendly if you use splenda...  Let me know if you want any of my recipes!

Good luck with the diet... :)

K - Yes, interestingly the travel was one of the harder trips I've taken in a while.  I got some sad news just before I left and it seemed like everything was a challenge after that.  But I didn't overdo it and even got in a tiny bit of exercise.  Now I'm in day two and working to get myself back in the groove.  Hope you are having a good week!

You know, that's one of the reasons why I created this poll.  Goals tend to make some feel inadequate and that's what happens to me when I set them too high.  So I'm one of those who does best when I set one goal pretty low.  When I reach that goal, it gives me incentive to go on.  It's interesting to hear I'm not the only one challenged with goals and goal setting!  Hang in there... :-)

Oh yeah, I'll take that SBD friendly choc cake recipe!  Sounds divine... ;-)

And although it must have been a drag with the misdiagnosis, good that you really don't have that physical challenge.

Awesome goals Peachy!  Training for and running a marathon is hughe, huge, huge so you already know what it's like to make and achieve high goals.  You rock!  And I like your walking goal of a reasonable time.  Really solid way to make a difference.

A number of years back, I was running and trained for and ran a couple of half marathons.  It was the most exhilirating experience ever!  My knees are shot now and I really miss all of that, but I can still do a good walk or jaunt on the elliptical.  So I have no excuse!

Thanks for sharing this information.  I actually set up this poll just to find out how people manage the goal setting process.  I wasn't exactly aware that there would be a discussion folder with it... so I haven't been as diligent in checking here.

Learn something new every day... ;-)

Thanks Jeromy, think I will skip the chocolate cake. The purpose of this diet ( at least to me ) is to shake the cravings and the idiation. ( thinking sweet!)
If I could find some good quinoa for phase 2, I would be happy. I hate quinoa! But it is good for me.
Please beware that testing negative for celiac fdoesn't mean you don't have it. As I understand it, only the DNA test is perfect and even that doesn't cover wheat allergies. Beat my head against the wall too long. Just speaking from my expereince. If I had my way, the whole world would do without wheat. Probably why I like this SBD so much. It mixes thing up .Lulu

Okay - south beach diet friendly gluten free choco cake...

preheat oven to 350

ingredients:
1/2 tsp canola oil (or cooking spray)
1/2 cup margarine trans-fat free
3 large eggs (split with whites in one bowl and yellows in another)
8 oz baking chocolate (no sugar added - i like to use this because of the flavor and also because chocolate powder sometimes has gluten)
1/4 cup of splenda (i don't like things too sweet)

put the 1/2 tsp canola oil in a 8 inch round cake pan and spread it around (you can also use cooking spray)
melt the baking chocolate and margarine together in the microwave
add to the chocolate 1/4 cup of splenda and the 3 egg yolks
take the egg whites and beat until they make hard peaks (like meringue)
fold the egg whites into the chocolate mixture
bake in water bath (put the 8 inch round cake pan in another pan that has hot water from your kettle in it) for 20-30 minutes

i would still only eat a small serving of it because it does have some fat... also you should know that this is a variation on the one i used to make and i haven't necessarily gotten all the kinks out of it yet - but i'm going to bake it with this recipe during the weekend so i'll let you know how it turns out! :)

Thanks for the concern Lulu... I actually went to a highly recommended specialist who actually has celiac himself and believes as well that everyone has a little of it... the fact was that after being off gluten for so long i was still having major stomach issues... we did all sorts of tests including biopsies and everything after i spent a month eating gluten again... all the tests came back negative - so we are about 99.9 % possitive i don't have celiac disease

Actually - I understand that you want to stop "thinking sweet" but remember that this is a life change - not a diet... (a diet is unsustanabe but a life change is forever)  I've been on and off for years and every time i would fail because i wouldn't have sweet and then something would tempt me and i would fall back into a bad habit...  over time i've actually found it better to make desert on the diet and satisfy my sweet tooth with something that is south beach friendly - that way there's less of a chance for cheating...  and the cravings really only come with white flour and sugar - that's why there's a phase 1
