Millions of Americans are either overweight or obese, and it’s not just the foods we eat or the time we don’t spend exercising, it’s also our unhealthy habits that breed an endless cycle of disease. Our susceptibility to heart disease, diabetes, high cholesterol, and high blood pressure is directly related to our toxic lifestyles. But the good news is that we can reverse our health risks and improve the quality of our lives if we just commit to making some simple changes. When you’re following a healthy lifestyle, such as the South Beach Diet, you’re not only reaping the weight-loss benefits of eating fresh wholesome foods and doing regular exercise — these good habits translate into other areas of your life by helping you get a better night’s sleep, reducing the clutter in your home, and enabling you to become a smarter shopper. If you or someone you know is in need of a wake-up call, we’ve got one for you!

How to participate: To help you improve your lifestyle and turnaround your unhealthy ways, we’re kicking off our first South Beach Wake-Up Call Challenge on Monday, October 3 in the South Beach Diet Community Challenges Message Boards. Each Monday for six weeks, you will be given a mini-challenge or task to accomplish as a team. Throughout the week of each mini-challenge, you will work with your team to complete the task. The weekly assignments will teach you how to detoxify aspects of your lifestyle as you lose weight and live more healthfully. You will grow both individually and as a team along with other people who have similar goals. Starting Monday, September 26, choose one of the four teams below and post to that team’s thread to meet your new teammates. That's all you have to do to join! Each week, you will post to your team folder about your progress on the weekly assignments. Each team will have a maximum of 20 people each; only the first 20 people to sign up for a team will be able to participate in the Challenge. All participating members of the Challenge must choose one of the following teams and post at least once a week to be eligible for the grand prize:

The team threads are now open. Simply click on the badges above to go to the official thread for each team. We'll post the weekly assignment on Monday, October 3.

We encourage you to regularly report on your progress with the assignments. Simply start posting to your team folder. You should also add photos documenting your recipes and exercises in our weekly Challenge threads to be eligible to win the grand prize. Message board volunteers and registered dietitians may periodically weigh-in on the assignments to answer any questions you may have. Winners will be chosen based on the quality and quantity of their posts after the Challenge ends at 11:59 EST on Sunday, November 13, 2011. Check out the official South Beach Wake-Up Call Challenge rules for more information.

One grand prize winner will receive a free one-month subscription to the site, a one-month subscription from South Beach Diet Dietitian Coaching Program, a copy of The South Beach Wake-Up Call book, and a box of the new South Beach Diet bars.

In addition, each week one participant who we feel best fulfilled the week’s mini-challenge will receive a copy of The South Beach Wake-Up Call book and a box of the new South Beach Diet bars.

I am READY!  :)

Haven't decided for sure yet, but I am leaning toward Kitchen Control - it has a strong ring to it, doesn't it!  But we'll see what Monday brings.  See you all then!!!

Heidi,
Glad to find you here!  I am leaning toward Healthy Habits or Kitchen Control.  But I will follow you wherever you decide to go.  Afterall, you are a winner!!!!  I have really come to depend on these challenges to keep me on track.  My friends and work associates are kind of tired of any conversation about sb.  They see the results, but don't want to hear about the process.  These group discussions give us a friendly circle of people with a common goal and I love it.
Hope to see you in the next round

I am definitely on this one... and it should turn into a good challenge for me, as I will be traveling for part of this period of time. The previous challenge got me off to a great start and I look forward to this one keeping me on track. Will have to decide which team to join, but you can be sure I will be there

Heidi, good to know you will be on this Challenge too!  I haven't quite nailed down which team I will take part in, but guess I will have to by Monday as well.

HA, I do know what you mean!  :)  But we just keep spreading the word, don't we.  I so want my family, extended family, and friends and associates to have the same chance at good health that we have here.

I have decided for sure on Kitchen Control.  My twins are old enough now that they are starting to do a bit of cooking on their own.  I try to keep their creations healthy by only keeping healthy ingredients around.  That's MY way of controlling the kitchen.  My son and daughter did breakfast for us this morning!  Emma got the table ready and Morgan made buttermilk pancakes from a Krusteaz mix.  I couldn't eat them because of the mix (hubby bought it for them), so today I am going to make up a big batch of wholegrain pancake mix.  I'm milling bulgar, hard red, and white wheats, flax seed, and oat groats.  I'm going to pre-add the baking powder, salt, and powdered eggs # non-fat milk so all they have to do is mix it with water, just like the junk in the store.  :)  Going to have to do a little research to get it right probably, so I will let you know how it turns out.

Fresh-milled flour has to be used right away to hold its nutritional value, so I will package the mix in seal-a-meal vaccuum bags and freeze them.

You are awesome!  I want to learn how to grind and use grains like you do.  I love to make bread and rolls, but I don't know how to adjust the recipes for whole grains.  We shall meet at the Kitchen Control group and do everythng we can to eat and live a healthy lifestyle.

I am still trying to decide which team to be on.  They all sound fun.  I would like the Kitchen Control one or the Exercise one for sure.  In fact I just got a new exercise bike.  I already have a treadmill, cardioglyde, and gazzelle.  I also have a bunch of Leslie Sansone's Walking tapes, cd's etc., and I have Windsor Pilates and several other really great Cardio Tapes and cd's.  So right now I am in a delimma, but I hope to get the wrinkles all ironed out early tomorrow.

I'm still trying to decide on a team.

I have a question though - noticed one of the prizes is  new South Beach Diet bars.  I didn't realize there were any and had understood that Kraft quit making them?  Are these something different and are they going to be an allowable SBD option?  Who sells them?

Sharon,
I am sure all of the teams will support each other.
I made my decision on where my heart is...and that is with exercise...I believe I can be most supportive on that team.
I am sure you will make the right decision for you...
I look forward to this Wake up call challenge.

You all know my love of cooking, it's meal prep mavens for me!  With the long hours I've been putting in at work, meal prep is the key to my success right now and I don't want to lose my key!

I'm in on the same team but for a different reason.  I like it quick and easy in the kitchen and to keep it that way, I need to work on meal prep.  :-)
