Welcome to the Fall 2009 Walking Challenge, and congratulations on taking important steps toward improving your health! Whether you’re new to walking or a seasoned strider, this Challenge will help you step up your exercise efforts and keep you motivated. Your first task is to set your goals. Do you want to start walking every day, or a couple of times a week? Are you walking to feel more energized or to lose weight? Are you interested in trying interval walking, or would you rather stroll at your own steady pace? Whatever your reasons for joining the Challenge, having specific goals will help you stay focused over the next eight weeks. Post your goals here on the message board, introduce yourself to others, and see if anyone else shares similar goals. Then start walking!

Read the official challenge rules.

My goal is to walk everyday, for a minimum of 30 minutes per day.  I just feel so much more energized after I walk, so I'd like to make it a lifelong habit to get in a walk each day.  I'd like to alternate days of longer, more strenuous walking with just a nice brisk 30 minute walk.  On the more strenuous days, I'd like to walk at least 45 minutes and I'm going to start trying the interval (Supercharged) walking.  My husband and I are on day 9 of a 40 day challenge just between the 2 of us to do some form of exercise daily and stick to our Southbeach plan to the letter.  Things like this just help keep me motivated.  Good luck to everyone!  We can all form some lifelong habits that will be life changing!!

Good Monday morning!

I am excited to join this challenge as a way to "step up" my current routine.  My neighbor and I walk about 45-50 minutes almost every morning.  Now is a great time to supercharge our workout by doing intervals and incorporating some strength training.  By the end of these eight weeks, I would like to be 4 lbs. lighter, more toned and stronger.

I am walking 5 times a week for at least an hour each time.  I am walking a half marathon in 3 weeks.  My goal is to add the interval training and the strength training so I can (hopefully) walk faster!

My goal is to walk 15 miles per week and do some intervals with it.  I plan to stick with the SB plan better and get the scale moving.

Well I am really excited about this challenge.  Thanks to the E & F board, I have been exercising and walking since July of 2008.  I started South Beach in April of 2008.  A couple of months before starting I realized that when I bent down to tie my shoes it felt like I was crushing every organ inside my body I was so obese.  My doctor had been suggesting South Beach for a couple of years.  I had some friends and family have heart problems and I realized that I was slowly eating myself to death at 230 + pounds.  So in April I started on the path to a healthier lifestyle by eating better.  In July 2008, I realized that food was only part of my problem.  For the few years before starting on the beach, I had been a world class, couch potato and channel surfer.  With some trepidation, I started to glance around the exercise boards and found Diane's (Gracie) board.  The people there were so supportive that before I knew it my exercise had gone from 200 minutes per month to 1,440 minutes of exercise this past month. The arthritis in my knee is so much better and I feel stronger and healthier than I have in years.  I FEEL younger at 161 pounds!
My goal for this challenge is to keep up the exercise/walking routine I have started and increased this month.  I will continue to borrow dogs from the Humane Society for my weekend walks.  It is a win/win for both the dogs and me.  I am working to keep my summer walking routine going during the week despite starting back to school.  I try to walk every day and for at least 2 of the days I do the interval walking.  I try to walk at least 3 miles when I walk and want to keep working on consistancy of exercise as well as reaching my target heart rate while walking.  Fall in the Finger Lakes is a beautiful time to walk so I really look forward to this challenge and have talked some of my E & F buddies in joining me here.  We will have a wonderful fall together.  Deb

Gwen, Glad to see you here.  This will be fun won't it?  You will get things moving again and I will reach my next big goal by getting under 160 pounds.   We can do this!  You will still be over on E&F won't you?

Hi.  I am hoping by signing up for this challenge I will be more disciplined to walk.  I work from 7:30 to 5:30 as a teacher.  I am usually on my feet all day, and by 5:30, I am emotionally and physically exhausted.  I would like more cardio exercise, however.  I plan to start out slowly at 20 minutes/walk, then hopefully increase the minutes in the weeks to come.  I am not sure if I will be able to do this daily, but I will try.

Just starting all this, although I am familiar with SB. My walking goals start small because I can only do maybe 10 minutes at a time. So week 1 goal is 10 minutes a day, everyday. I want to increase that weekly, until I feel confident enough to take my dog for a 30 minute outside walk everyday.  I'm looking forward to the challenge, I want to stay motivated.

I'm very excited about this fall walking challenge as it will give me a reason to "shake up" my daily routine.  I currently walk 30 minutes a day Monday-Friday and tend to walk 1 hour a day on weekends.  For this challenge I'm setting two goals, first I'd like to increase my walking pace to a quicker speed and secondly I'd like to increase the number of minutes I walk per day.  On Monday-Friday I'd like to increase by 5 minutes a day for the first week and continue to increase the time to reach the goal of 45 minutes per day. On weekends I'd like to increase my walking time to 1 1/2 hours per day.  I think I will be able to reach these two goals by the end of the eight week walking challenge!!!  Sandy Gr

Today is my chance to be back on track with a purpose.  I am ALWAYS trying to walk 30 minutes each day.  Did very well with that goal until July when my walking partner, Holly the Dog, became ill.  She is well and eager--Now it's time to start again.

I am a very inconsistent walker and so I would like to see myself walk every other day faithfully for at least 30 minutes. Whick means that on the weekends and my 2 weeks days off I should have no excuses not to do that. Anything beyond that would be a bonus. I have a wonderful 1 1/2 year old golden retriever named Fenway who enjoys it when I decided to take a walk. So it will be good for both of us. If I ever get my pedometer to behave itself I will even be able to track my mileage. For now I'll just keep track of minutes.

Happy walking everyone.

I have been walking at least 4 days a week since January, average 4 miles per day but this is 3 times at work and then with my dog in the evening.  I am walking my first 5K 9/19. I started it to lose weight but when I walk at work I do it now for stress release and weight.
My goal is to walk 6 days a week and include the interval walking plan from SB.

My goal is to follow the Interval program from this, my first day of Phase 1 until I reach my goal weight of 130 lbs.  I realize that I may need longer than this challenge but it will help me get started.

Hi Everyone:
I want to join this challenge, but, this site won't let me read the rules.
I need to increase my time, my distance and be more consitent.

do we need to a specific number of miles, or minutes or weight loss? to complete the challenge?
This is so hard to figure out when the site won't let me in to read the rules.

I've been on the Exercise and Fitness board, and as I've said there, I'd rather play than work....so any kind of outdoor activity that gets me walking, skiing, hiking, kayaking, etc is my kind of activity.

Maybe I'll be back here on this challenge site, maybe I'll have to catch up with you somewhere else.
I kept getting an error message when I tried to get here.  I'm not going to let SBDO stop me from having fun.  Actually, if I can't log on here, it might be a blessing....less time on the computer, and more time on my feet!

Good luck to everyone!

For the past several years I have been a walker.  I love to walk outside.  Just as easily as it becomes a habit or priority-- it can also NOT become one.  I always feel better when I do.  A move to Florida. the summer heat, and a sore foot has decreased my daily- at least 2 mile walk fpr the past 6/8 weeks.  Now the foot is healed and the weather is cooler .  My goal is to walk at least my 2 miles a day most days of the week.  I know it helps with weight loss and does it ever help with emotional well being too.  No interval walking for me just yet-- nice and easy strolling does it!
