Week 1: Wake Up!

Obesity is an epidemic in America. As more of us continue to eat unhealthily, exercise less, and not get enough sleep, we’re getting larger and sicker. Now is the time for you to take control of your health and improve your quality of life. Take this week to evaluate your lifestyle and determine where you need to make improvements. Come up with a plan of action to tackle how to start implementing these changes. These are some questions you can ask yourself:

  • Are you eating enough vegetables every day?
  • Do you make time to enjoy your meals?
  • Have you cut down on packaged/processed foods?
  • Do you make an effort to exercise several times a week?
  • Are you getting enough sleep?
  • Do you have regular physical exams?

Get your whole family on board! As you’re working to lead a healthier lifestyle, they can make the same changes and improve their lives, too.

This Week’s Challenge: Use your online journal to record your thoughts about your current lifestyle and what kinds of changes you’d like to make to improve your health. Plan strategies for sticking with your South Beach Diet meal plan, and brainstorm ways to get more veggies into your meals. Create a list of alternatives to replace any packaged/processed foods you normally eat. Make some goals to give your exercise regimen a boost. Be certain to get seven to nine hours of sleep each night. And if you’re past due for a physical exam, make an appointment with your doctor and get your blood pressure, cholesterol, and triglyceride levels checked. Share with your teammates what lifestyle changes you would like to make and how you plan to execute them.

This is a great assignment to start out the Wake-up Challenge, thank you.  I just attended a Cardiac Conference on Saturday, Oct. 1, 2011 and found out that 2 out of 3 women are overwt or obese, 54% of women have heart disease and this number is increasing,  it is time for a wake-up call for women everywhere.

This is a great first challenge.  I've been thinking of using the online journal, but I haven't used it yet. I've also been procrastinating about setting up a doctor's appointment, so I will make it this week!

Hi SharrlaR,

So happy to have you as part of this Challenge.  Please post under one of the Team Threads. Just pick whihever Team name appeals to you and post that you want to be on that team. I can then add your name.

There is still room on all teams and I know you will get a warm welcome. You will have a great time with the Challenge.

Sounds like a great start for you. Please share with us everything that you have learned. I went to a hooked on health seminar in St Louis years ago and it was great motivation for me. The year was2006 it was the beginning for me.

Sharrla,

It's one level up from this Topic thread. Be sure that it says "All" in the filter and you'll then see the four different group names. Just click on that one and post a message saying that you want to join.

Here's a dirrect link too: http://www.southbeachdiet.com/forums/south-beach-diet-community-challenges

What a wonderful reflection on how we are applying the tools! It's scary and exciting at the same time to reflect on making change. Getting my family on board is something I've been working on too. My daughter is following in my footsteps with the exercise and now I use her as an example. Trying to get my husband to join the gym too. Great reflection questions Rochelle, I will be sure to post in my thread.

I am new to this challenge and to the discussion groups.  When you say post to thread do you mean here?
ery good first week questions which I need to give some serious thought to.  I know where I want to get to - just need to find the right path to stay on to get there.   I started really concentrating on getting exercise this past week and just finished my 4th mile of a DVD "walk" that I love.  I was doing two miles off and on over the past few weeks and am boosting that now. Thanks for helping out.

Hi there.  I've finished my 2 weeks of Phase 1, and I would love to join Healthy Habits for the SB Community Challenge!

I live in Australia, and was reading a relationship book on what women can do to make their marriages better.  One of the chapters was about looking after yourself so your husband can feel proud of who he married.  And the author said the SBD was the only thing she ever managed to stick with.  So, I looked it up, and here I am!!  I have to say, I'm impressed.

I've suffered from clinical depression for 14 years, and sometimes it's hard to stay motivated.  But I know a healthy lifestyle has a lot to do with fighting depression.  So I'm going to try my best to be a part of the SBD community.  I look forward to sharing with you all.  :-)

Thank you

Welcome to the beach! You have come o the right place! I also have depression and have had for years. IT is an ongiong effort to have a good, healthy life. Do be sure while you are in Phase 1 to get your daily serving of starchy beans and your 2 servings of dairy. both will help you feel satisfie and give you some very important nutrients. I hang out in the Century Club, but you can always sent me a message if you would like some support. I have made lots of great friends here on the beach! Liz

Hi dlouise,

So happy to have you join us in the Challenge. I have added your name to the Workout Squadron and now you need to go back to the Workout Squadron thread (not this thread which is the weekly challenge thread) and post there.

Simply click on message board in the left hand column and once on that page make sure the drop down menu has Show All. You should see all the teams listed. Just click on the thread for your team and meet ll your teammates and join in.

Hi jeanineNg,

We would love to have you be part of the Challenge.
Please go back to the Message board page and choose a team. Simply begin posting on the Team thread of your choice and I will add your name.

Each week there is a new thread that describes the Challenge for that week but you always respond to the Challenge in your team thread.
Your teammates will be happy to help.
Good luck!

Rochelle - is this the challenge??? I use "My Journal" most days as my food log anyway or, are you talking about the one on our profile page? This is my first challenge participation and with the change in the site format, I'm having trouble trying to figure out where I'm supposed to put things. I can't print out any of the posts any more on the new format and I have to wade through everything I've already read to get to the new ones and when I select that I only want to see posts to me, it still gives me everything. I'm really trying to be open minded about this and give it a chance but, I have to tell you, it's very frustrating. I don't want to hold back the rest of the team while I struggle with this. Am I supposed to be doing something that will add points or something for the team??

Hi finofriend,

Sorry for all the confusion and difficulty. Yes, there are some...problems but we are hearing them and to be honest we are also experiencing them so also hoping they are addressed quickly.

Here is the linkl to get to your team thread for the Challenge:

http://www.southbeachdiet.com/forums/south-beach-diet-community-challenges/topic/kitchen-control-team-official-thread?page=1

To get to it on your own you could click on Message Board in the left hand column (from this page) and once back on the page which lists all the boards having to do with the Challenges you want to make sure the drop down menu says ALL. Then you should see each of the teams listed, plus where to get badges, the weekly Challenges, etc.

We do know about the inability to only see unread messages. I think I was probably the first to notice this since I work with it all day. Yuck.. very annoying!  As the days pass it will be less of a nuisance since those older threads will disappear. I've been going be the dates and just my knowledge of the thread names.
We have voiced everyones' unhappiness over this I assure you.
Thank  you for pointing out the lack of a print post option. I will report that. At this time I don't know if that was an error or if this feature is truly gone but I will see what I can find out. For now you can copy and paste any post you want into a word document and save it that way. Again, I know this is a nuisance but it is a way to work around the issue for now.

As far as the Challenge there are no points to earn. You merely respond to the weekly Challenge on the Team thread.
I hope I have answered your questions but feel free to send me a buddy email or post again.
Good luck on the Challenge!
