Week 2: Arm Yourself With Smart-Eating Strategies

Dr. Agatston recommends that you follow the basic healthy eating principles of Phase 2 or 3 of the South Beach Diet during the holiday season. By following Phase 2 or 3, you’ll be able to stick to a healthy meal plan without facing weight gain and guilt once the holidays are over. Whether you’re hosting a family feast or attending a friend’s holiday party, here are some smart eating strategies to help you stick to your healthy eating plan:

  • Eat a healthy snack before the party. Enjoy a South Beach Diet-friendly snack that includes lean protein and fiber to help stabilize your blood sugar levels, and fend off cravings. Prepare a flavorful nut mix by seasoning a cup of roasted peanuts, walnuts, pecans, and almonds with a variety of herbs and spices, such as ground cinnamon, ground ginger, ground cloves, and cayenne powder.

  • Consider all your options. Before you start adding foods to your plate, look through the selection and decide which ones you’re going to enjoy and which ones you’ll avoid. Choose options made with the healthiest ingredients, such as vegetables, whole grains, and lean meats. Avoid foods that are loaded with cheese and bad carbs. Stay away from cream sauces and don’t overdo it on sugary treats. Though, you should feel free to enjoy the occasional indulgence, like a slice of your favorite pumpkin pie.

  • Be social with other guests. If you’re at a party or hosting one, mingle with friends or introduce yourself to someone you’ve never met. If you make it a point to stay far away from the buffet table, you’ll avoid mindlessly noshing on foods while having a conversation.

  • Go easy on the alcohol. Drinking alcohol is a part of the holiday festivities, and starting on Phase 2, you can enjoy an occasional drink with your meal, preferably a glass of wine. Be sure to follow-up your alcoholic beverage with water to keep you hydrated and full. Women should limit their intake to 1 alcoholic beverage a day and men to 2 a day. Another option: Try a virgin cocktail like the South Beach Diet Mojito (Phase 1).

This Week’s Challenge: Let us know if you’re hosting a party or attending one this holiday season, and share your best party strategies. What foods will you choose to indulge in, and what dishes will you try to avoid? What healthy snack did you enjoy before attending or hosting a party? Share your healthy eating strategies and how you plan to make your party a South Beach Diet-friendly affair to remember. Also, post your favorite holiday “mocktail” recipes here, and let us know your tricks for healthy drinking at holiday parties.

The 2nd week's challenge is indeed a challenge.  Parties are my downfall and I'm planning on tackling them with a vengence!  The first party I'll be attending is Tuesday evening.  I plan to eat a sensible SB breakfast and lunch that day.  I've asked the hostess what she'll be serving; she's a close friend and knows I'm eating SB.  Most of what she's serving is SB friendly, I'll just avoid the potatoes (and stay away from the dessert table - out of sight, out of mind) and bring my own salad dressing; all else should be good for me (and, my personal challenge for the week is to really watch portions).  I've offered to bring the SB recipe for Spicy Lemon Edamame for an appetizer and I'll have a slice of turkey rolled up with veggies for snack before I go.  I'll also bring selzer water for my 'cocktail' and add lime wedge (I don't typically drink alcohol anyway and it looks like I'm indulging but I'm not and its refreshingly tart).  I wish everyone a good week.

I only see my post and its been 5 days since you challenged us this week.  Did I post in the wrong place?  I'm new at this and have a little difficulty getting around in these communities.  Thanks.

The plan for the challenge is that each person posts on the discussion for their team - so you should post your response to the Silver Belles discussion.  That way, you can discuss/collaborate with your team members and review others' ideas as well.

Hope that helps!

I think I may have posted my response to week two's challenge in the wrong place because I am not seeing anyone elses posts so I am reposting my response to this weeks challenge sorry if I'm repeating my posts

Well I am not hosting a party for the holidays and I don’t really think we are attending a holiday party per say just doing Christmas dinner with some friends. We have a thing that we do all year long each month with some friend called “Sunday dinner” and we are doing it for Christmas this month. This Sunday dinner thing has been hard on my diet. But what I do is I eat light before we go, keep my portions small. I stay away from White breads, creamy, cheesy if I can, and very small desert if I just can’t resist. For me Desert has to be worth it but worth it doesn’t mean I need to have a big piece just because I want some.

My healthy snacks include almonds, vanilla Yogurt crème, Celery and peanut butter or laughing cow cheese or an occasional Dark Chocolate. I try to stay away from where the food is set out at. I help in the kitchen cleaning or setting the table, getting someone something to drink etc. I find that if I keep busy I don’t have time to nibble.

My Mocktail is a virgin Mojito but I didn’t know that Southbeach had one until I saw this challenge. My mocktail is a little different but not too much.

I use Splenda blend to make simple syrup it’s a little runny but OK. Bring 1 cup sugar and ½ cup water to a boil and boil for 1 minute and let cool before using. I used a mortar and pestle to infuse 8-10 mint leaves and ½ lime (cut up in small chunks) together then I put it both of those and 1 oz simple syrup and ½ - 1 oz. sweet and sour and Ice in a shaker and shake hard. Pour it in a highball glass and top it with club soda. Now if you like diet soda like 7-up or Sierra Mist you can bypass the syrup and sweet and sour all together. I can’t drink diet sodas or diet yogurts or sugar free Jell-O and gum it all has aspartame in it and it’s a migraine trigger for me. So I improvise sometimes at the cost of calories but I try to keep it to a minimum. If I add alcohol I put in 1 oz. of Jamaican spiced rum this turns out tasting sort of like a maraschino cherry with the rum. I usually drink a glass of wine though. When adding alcohol the calories can add up really fast so I try to refrain from too much drinking. I really don’t drink much anyway.

Hi,

In order for your post to count in the challenge it needs to be posted in your group's thread, so you probably will want to copy this post and paste it in as a message in the Silver Belle's thread.
