Week 3: Log Your Miles

How far are you walking? And how much time does it take? A great way to stay motivated as you walk is to log your miles, and you can do it right here on the message board using an online ticker. Find out how to create a ticker. Then update it after every walk so other members can see your progress. Keeping track of the time you spend walking is also a great motivator. If you’re walking outside, wear a watch and a pedometer, a small gadget that hooks to your pants waistband and tracks your steps. If you’re at the gym on the treadmill, set the amount of time you’d like to walk. Share how much time you spend walking each day here in the boards and cheer each other on!

I don't measure miles, I use minutes.  I try to get at least 30 minutes every day.  I think that's about 2-21/2 miles a day.  I find that the only way I can do the exercise is to do it first thing in the morning.

Wow, Val!  You must be walking very fast.  Unless I've measured my stride way off, my pedometer shows about 1.5 miles or just a little more for 30 minutes.

Thank for keeping the Challenge  interesting.  It will motivate me to walk toward a weekly goal of 10 miles, and it motivated  me to update my ticker:)  Good luck to all!!

Boy, you guys must sprint. 2 miles with hills and intervals takes me 40 mins. Even on my treadmill at 3.2 miles per hr takes 40 mins. I've logged in 18 miles in 2 weeks

I'm doing fine Teresa.....just not losing like I want.  It's been a hard summer.  We have chilly temps today that are supposed to last all week I think.  How are you doing?

I love to update my tickers.  I have several for exercise and walking.  I try to walk at least 2.5 - 4 miles each time I am out walking.  I also try to shoot for 60 minutes of walking and I make sure part of my walk is in the style of interval walking to get the most out of my workout.   I am doing a virtual walk to NYC for New Years to meet some of the gang.  I am also doing a virtual trip to visit my sister in Toledo.   I am just over half way there.   It is fun because I am meeting sb friends on the way.  I have already walked to my daughter's in Clifton Park and then headed to Ohio.   When I get done there I am trying the big walk to my other daughter's in California!

I have met my walking goal of 55 miles for this month plus a few extra miles and I walked 6 dogs from the Humane Society (2 more than my goal).  Candy had suggested I add an extra 5 miles this month and I did it!  She is a real cheerleader.  It really felt great to meet that goal over the weekend.  Now I just keep adding to my ticker for the rest of the month.  I guess I will have to shoot for 60 in October.  We will be camping in the beginning of the month at Letchworth State Park so there will be many hours of walking for sure as we walk the gorge and the falls.

I do have an Omron pedometer and really love it. I do think I need to adjust it though because my stride has gotten longer since I first started using it.  Both my treadmill and Gazelle (new toy) have mileage and calories burned monitors on it.  My treadmill also keeps track of my heart rate so I can make sure I am on target with my walking and interval walking.  I will continue to walk outside as much as possible because soon enough it will be snowing and I will be forced inside on the treadmill/Gazelle.    I hope everyone has a chance to get out and enjoy the fall weather.

I do 2 miles in about 40 minutes too.  I think that is a good pace for me.  I am not supposed to jog but 3mph seems to keep me at my target rate and that is fine with me.

well, i had problems locating this challenge, and now know how to get here.

i started seriously walking sunday, and have been walking daily ever since.  i made a mistake the week before by pushing to much, going 4 miles, and that cause alot of soreness..  ive since come to my senses.  im now doing 2 miles a day and slowly building myself up.  it takes me 15 mins to do a mile, and i love it.  ive never felt better.  my mood is better, i feel less stress, and by exercising, its making me make better choices in eating...

i want to make walking a daily routine..  im just looking forward to the time where i dont have to fight with myself to get out there, lol...

This is a good idea that I don't do consistently. I've had two pedometers and they don't last. Recently I base it on minutes. I know it takes me 15-17 minutes to do a mile, so 3 miles in just under an hour. It's not exact. I will add a ticker for my walking so it might keep me more accountable.

wow it feels so good to get up in the morning and walk!  it keeps me energized all day and i have been sleeping like a baby!

i have been walking 1 mile every morning, monday thru Friday.  My teenage daughter is learning how to drive so i let her drive my "course" to measure it. it is 1.2 miles and it takes me about 20-25 minutes. depending on if i do the hill or not. so thats 6 miles a week now.  How many weeks is the challenge?

i would love to do a ticker but my work computer wont let me onto some sites, so i will try to update at home.

I am only going into my 3rd week, but my weight loss has not been as big as everyone else.  now i am terrified to add starch and fruit. i really thought the walking would help boost weight loss, but not mine yet!

Hello Louise...glad you decided to join us.  There seems to ge a very active group here.  I am enjoying the challenge for sure.  I met my walking goal for September.  Now I have to set a new challenge for October.  Sounds like you are successful right out of the gate.

I do that too now that I can tell what my pace is and how long it takes me to do a mile.  I have metered it with both measured routes, my treadmill, and using my pedometer.  I do like to drive around and map out routes so I know the mileage I am actually walking.

Someone once reminded me that muscle weighs more than flab.  When you walk you are building muscle.  Give your body time to adjust to your new exercise routine.   I have noticed in the past when I intensify my exercise routine that the scales don't always adjust accordingly.  Are your clothes fitting better?  The scales are not the only measurement of success, there are many NSVs such as inches lost, toned muscles, better sleep, better over all well being, and knowing that you are getting both cardio and weight bearing exercise in to help you be in healthier condition.   Good luck.    Some of this I knew and some I have learned from my SB friends over this past year's journey.

I know last week's guiding discussion was in the area of safety but I was watching the news tonight and thought the best place to post this information was on the most current weekly thread.  The local news told of a woman who was hit the other night in a hit and run accident.  After several days in the hospital she passed away.  The sad part was that no one knew who she was.   When emergency crews found her she did not have any identification on her as she was walking.  Her boyfriend did not hear about it until the day after she died.  He didn't even know she was in the hospital because no one knew who she was.   It really got me to thinking that I do not carry any i.d, on me when I walk.  Sometimes if I go shopping, I will carry a credit card.  Sometimes I carry my cell phone that has my ICE (In Case Of Emergency) number programmed into it but there are times I don't even have that with me.  After this incident, I will definitely be more careful to have identification with me.  I hope we all stay safe but these incidents are called accidents because no one intended for them to happen.

Be safe and have a great week of walking.

Hello all,

Well I did it on Friday. I joined a planet fitness close to where I work and tonight was the first night I went. I walked during my lunch hour yesterday so I got my walking in but tonight I went to the gym and it felt great!! My question to everyone. I know this is a walking challenge, but do miles on the elliptical machine count? I did 3.18 miles so I hope so. I will add my exercise/mile ticker later in the week. Hope all is going well for everyone.

Thought some of you on the Fall Walking Challenge would like this website to map out new walking routes. http://www.usatf.org/routes/map/

I did compare one of the routes to one I drove and it was accurate.

I have been keeping up with minutes more than miles, but I think it would be fun to see how far I'm actually going.  Since I walk on a hike and bike trail, I can't measure with my car odometer, so I think I'll try to go out and get a pedometer today.  I've been trying to walk at least 45 minutes per day...We'll see how far that actually is!

Personally, if I could use an elliptical I would definitely count the miles.  See what everyone else says.  You go... great on joining the gym.
