Week 3: Your Challenge -- Participate in an Outdoor Activity

Now that the weather is warmer, it’s easier to head outdoors to exercise. Taking a hike, running or walking outdoors, tennis, golf, and swimming are some excellent outdoor activities. As you’re following the South Beach Diet, we recommend getting a minimum of 20 minutes of interval exercise every day. For instance, walking in intervals involves you alternating between periods of fast walking with periods of slower recovery walking.

This Week: Take your workout routine outdoors! Read our Beginner’s Guide to Hiking and get tips on Interval Walking Outdoors and In for exercise ideas. Tell us what outdoor exercise you chose to try this week. How did the exercise challenge your body differently? Did you exercise alone or with friends? Is this something you want to incorporate into your workout routine? How did you alter your workout to adjust to the warmer weather? Share your exercise tips with other members here!

It has been raining here in Fort Lauderdale, FL all day. I'll be thinking of an outdoor activity until it stops probably by Wednesday. I hope everyone is doing well and let's get outdoors and into the sun or moon!

What What a difference a day makes. I was able to get in a SAND/PAVEMENT RUN/WALK 50 min including a 5 minute stretch.

I started out walking to warm up on pavement to one song on ipod. Then when the second song started I picked up the pace.  By the the third song (Shakira's World Cup theme) I was jogging. After that I slowed down a bit because I knew I'd be getting my sneakers through the sand. Sand can be hard, alot of resistance. After the sand I'd get back on the pavement and follow the high/low intensity until I got back to my car.Click here for a larger view.

I went early enough so that I was not too hot or sunburned. I had water waiting for me and I went alone. I like to workout alone sometimes because I can do WHATEVER I want to do.

I really felt my calves during the sand treks. I know I'll feel it tomorrow.
I'll be honest this was not a new workout for me. Over the years this workout will get me out of the gym and in the outdoors. So I am still on the hunt for something new.

Hi Girls!

We had a GREAT couple of days celebrating the 4th!  Our annual Calder Family get-together is at a city park in Orem, Utah so we packed up a Beachy Picnic meal and heading south.  I prepared Mock fried chicken (to replace the KFC that has been our traditional meal) by rolling my chicken breasts in egg, then a mixture of freshly ground WW and oat flour, finely chopped walnuts, and spices.  Then I put a little rack in my baking pan and "oven fried" those boneless breasts.  Additionally, we had mashed sweet taters and I made fresh coleslaw.  It was GREAT and everybody at the gathering who knows me at all remarked favorably about how good I am looking!  I was so proud!  And for those of you who do not follow the Monday Weighers thread, I just want to toot my own horn and tell y'all that I am down to 145!!!!  Only 20 more pounds to go!  :)

I Haven't decided yet what to do outside this week, but I do know I will be doing it with my bugs, so I'll keep you posted!

I am so impressed by your success, your help to everyone here (and on P2) and your dedication. I wrote this for you today:

The Milkmaid

The milkmaid starts her days anew

In feeding all her goats.

She spoils them gastronomically,

With freshly sprouted oats.

She lifts the bales of hay with ease,

She shows her children well,

The origin of what they eat,

As she tolls the dinner bell.

She takes the gift of mothers milk,

Adds rennet to the catch,

And strains it thru the cheesecloth

To make the final batch.

And lovingly this gift of land,

And beast is wisely shared.

The origin is quite well known,

Because the milkmaid cared.

Dedicated to Heidi, our Milkmaid

Oh, my gosh I'm seriously sitting here bawling!  That is the sweetest thing anyone has ever done for me, Laurie, and your poem is so beautiful!  What an amazing gift... right from your heart to mine.  Thank you, thank you!  I would LOVE to have a nice copy of your poem.  I'm going to frame it for the wall and I'll treasure it always!

Challenges these are!   With a herniated disc I can walk minimally, but the outside is out with the asthma and high humidity.   So, I am going to extend any normal walking activities.  I was able to start the week with a long leisurely stroll through the Mississippi River museum, aquarium and river boat exhibit.  Going in and out of the heat kept me going and of course, having grand children coaxing me on was a perk.   Today at work everyone was at a weeklong conference except me, so I took Lucy, my standard poodle to work with me.   There is a 50 foot hallway that she and I did laps back and forth.  I will take a picture of our nice long hall tomorrow and maybe even Lucy.  (Oh, and besides the humidity, we have had 4.11 inches of rain in the last 48 hours.
