Week 4: Create Your Own Pizza
Hands down, pizza is an all-around family favorite. Instead of heading to your local pizzeria, it’s easy to prepare one at home using healthier ingredients. On Phase 2, use whole-wheat tortillas or whole-wheat pita bread as the “crust” of your pizza, and on Phase 1, use portobello mushroom caps. Then, use fresh veggies, reduced-fat cheese, no-sugar added tomato sauce, and lean meats as toppings. No matter what time of day it is, you can enjoy pizza!. Try our Greet-the-Sun Breakfast Pizza or the Grilled Spinach, Garlic, and Goat Cheese Pizzas for a light lunch. Pizza for dessert? Why not? In the new South Beach Diet Super Quick Cookbook, you’ll find a delectable Apricot-Berry Dessert Pizza.
This Week: We want you to create your own pizza! You can prepare one for breakfast, lunch, dinner, or dessert. Tell us what South Beach Diet-friendly ingredients you used. How did it taste? Is it something you would want to eat again? What exciting ingredients did you use? Was it a hit with your family? Let us know about your new pizza dish here!
When I post pics along with my entries can you all see them all the time? Sometimes I can see my own pics and sometimes they are gone. I can always see everyone elses though. Just curious.
Thanks!
I should confess that I have never been much of a fan of homemade pizzas. I just have never been able to put one together that could hold a candle to The Pie Pizzaria or even Papa Murphey's, to name a couple. So THIS challenge was particularly interesting and fun, because I really, REALLY had to put some thought into it. I didn't know if it was going to be very satisfying to the old taste-buds, but I had to give it my country best. Oh, and since building our pizzas was a "family affair" and the camera is back home where it belongs, this will be an "photo-journal" sort of post!
First of all, credit for the crust I finally decided on goes to SB Community member jenllo, who posted her recipe for Crazy Pizza just three days ago! And if you are reading this Jen, in my opinion this crust recipe is a definit keeper! Delish! To get jenllo's recipe, her post number is 17199.1 and it is in the Recipe Exchange folder on the Phase II Board. And, Jenllo! Get yer talented hiney over here and join in the FUN!
Alright! First I made up the crust in a 9x13 pan, like Jen's recipe instructed, then I cut it into 4 big pieces (disclaimer - using a quarter of it probably made it a bit high on starch, but that was the only starch I had eaten today). Each of us got a plate with just crust and several old cereal bowls of topping to choose from for making our own pizza. Here's a pic of me and my bugs posing with our "topping buffet". It included green and yellow bells, tomato slices, lean ground beef seasoned with Greek seasoning, quartered artichoke hearts, canadian bacon, part-skim mozzerella, and my own homemade feta cheese crumbles! (I had planned to cut red onion wedges and it completely slipped my old, tired mind!)
These pictures are my bugs... building their pizzas and expressing their gratitude for the fun dinner with enthusiastic thumbs up!

And finally... the finished products. In order of picture appearance... Hubby's, Emma's, Morgan's, then Mine (before I added the feta cheese).

Holy cow, I think Emma's is a masterpiece! That child is gonna be a GREAT COOK someday!
So there you have it! The Milkmaid Family "Make-yer-own-darn-pizza" adventure. And it was awesome! I WILL do it again - it's a great family night activity - but next time... MORE TOPPINGS! :)
The family pizza night turned out great. What a beautiful family, a great model for the rest of us.
Oh and home made goat cheese - that's a killer, you're crazy!!! *all smiles*
