Week 4: Find a Walking Buddy

You’ve made it—you’re halfway through the Walking Challenge. You’ve accomplished a lot so far, so there’s no doubt that you’re feeling a little stronger and a little healthier. To keep you motivated and walking over the midway hump, now’s a great time to find a walking buddy. Ask a neighbor, friend, or family member if they’d like to join you on your strolls. When you make a commitment with someone else, and that person comes to rely on you, you’re more likely to stick with an exercise routine and keep up the good work. Plus, you’ll look forward to the camaraderie! Keep in mind when choosing a walking partner that it’s best to find someone who walks at the same pace and shares similar goals. Tell us how you’re feeling now that you’re halfway through the Challenge, and let us know if you have a walking buddy who helps you stay on track.

Admin Richard & All,
In one word I can describe how I feel half way through this challenge....FANTABULOUS!!   Today I was late getting home from work and even though I felt really dragged out from not getting out of school until 6pm, I still ate a beachy dinner.   I knew I wanted to exercise but didn't know if I would have the energy or not.  THEN I got thinking of all my fellow SBers that were going to be posting with all their great stories of how great they felt after exercising and walking so I got on the treadmill and Gazelle for 40 minutes and 3 miles.   I do feel much better!
Now walking partners is something else altogether.  I have looked for a steady walking partner but have not been successful in that area.   The American Heart Assn. had a webpage up for awhile where you could post your interest in a walking partner in your area.....no invites back.  I do have a teacher friend that I walk with about once a week. It was more in the summer before school started again and both our schedules got out of sync.  I will walk with my hubby on weekends.   We like to walk to our favorite breakfast place in town if the weather is nice on Sundays.  It is a 3+ mile walk and we do it in just under 60 minutes.  I don't walk as fast when I am holding hands with someone ;o).  Of course, there are the dogs I walk from the Humane Society.  Unfortunately I can only walk them on Saturdays now because my school schedule does not get me out early enough to walk one during the week.   The dogs are actually very good company.  Most weekends hubby will walk with the dogs too.  That is if he gets home off the road early enough to do that with me.
I have had several people say they wanted to start walking with me but again no one has really committed to it yet.   I know they will when they are ready to make that step towards being healthier.  I don't mind walking alone especially when I am listening to a good book.  I like to just walk around the lake, trails, and town just hanging out and checking out what is happening.  I am a watcher for sure.  For now I will just have to be happy walking with my cyber buddies.
Well my inspiring friends.  I hope you have a great week.  Richard says we are half way through this challenge but I know that I will be in this challenge for life and if I keep taking care of myself I bet it will be a very long life!

I have been trying to start up a walking group for the past few weeks. I invited 6 or 7 women in my area who I know walk on their own. I had 3 or 4 who were interested but so far I can't find a time that works for everyone. One person wants to walk at 9 at night another is available at 6 am. (in both cases I am usually in bed) So I think I will scale back my plan and find at least one person that wants to walk at the same time, and at the same pace, that I do.

I wish you lived out here.  We would go walking together.  I have tried to get friends to walk but not much interest.  I even posted on facebook my 8 week challenge, I have support, but no walkers.

Does anyone have trouble posting on this site.  If I go through AOL it will not post but if I go to internet explorer it works.  Maybe I'm the only one??

Hello everyone,

I have to say that this walking challenge has really helped me get on track with exercising. For the first 6 weeks that I joined the boards and started the southbeach diet I was in major contemplation mode. I knew that I needed to exercise but I wasn't committing to a regular schedule. I would get out and walk maybe once or twice a week but if it got too busy I would let that go first. Since I started the walking challenge, I schedule it into my day. I also joined a gym. Last week I exercised for 5 days and logged about 13 miles between the treadmill and elliptical. This week I've started my week out right and exercised 2 days, logging in about 6 miles so far.

Before I started the southbeach and exercising I would walk from my car in the parking lot at work to my office (up only one flight of stairs) and dread it. When I started contemplating taking the elevator up that one flight, I knew something had to change.

Today as I was walking at a decent pace from my car (with my purse, sb friendly lunch and gym bag) I jogged up the stairs because I was running late and barely had to breath hard. It felt great and it made me realize how far I've come since August 2nd. It's good to be on the beach.

Where is it you live again?  I see palm trees in the back of your picture so I am sure it is not NYS ;o)  I am sure you have told me but I sometimes forget where everyone is from.  I have always meant to get a map of the US and stick pins in it with people's board names to try and keep track.  It would be great to have a buddy from SB close by to start a walking group with for usure.  I did post to someone who had a profile listed to my hometown but never go a response.  Sigh.

I have had problems off and on, even using IE.  I could not get on the site at all last Friday.  I know it was the site because I was able to access all my other Internet sites just not SB.

What a great story.   Thanks for sharing!  I know it was about 4 months on SB before I finally decided I needed to add exercise to my program.  I knew I had a good handle on the healthy lifestyle with my eating but I really needed exercise to add those benefits also.  When I started, I thought 1 mile was great.   Now I feel like I am cheating myself if I do less than 3 miles in an outing.  It feels great doesn't it?   You should be very proud of what you have accomplished in such a short time.

I live in San Franciso Bay Area, but in the summer I live in San Clemente CA.  I love walking down there.  I have a perfect route from the house to the Pier, along the beach and back home.
The picture is taken in San Clemente.

Love your story.  I had the same problem before the challenge. If I miss a day or two, well I'll just try next week.  I needed a push to get out.  I really do love walking and feeling great after!!

My walking buddy Monday-Thursday is my dog Toby, he knows the rules, one potty break in the beginning of the walk and one at the end (my son trained him, I can not take any credit). I really enjoy walking w/ my dog, as he doesn't mind if we walk fast or run a bit, he is up to the challenge w/ no complaining. During the weekend I walk w/ my husband, we enjoy the time together and we challenge each other with "let's go a little further" or "go a little faster" which makes the walks interesting. We are halfway through the fall walking challenge, I would say I feel great!!!

I'm trying to get a walking buddy, but it's hard as I don't walk at the same time every day.  I have to fit it in when I can.  Sometimes my DGDs will walk with me if they're over, or one of my DILs.  I usually rely on the 15 Mile Sisters and E&F Walking threads to spur me to get out and do it.  I get out my pedometer and my mp3 player and just go.

Hi All-- can't believe we are 1/2 way through this challenge.  I am so lucky to have my sweety to walk with.  We try to get out and walk nightly-- my inclination is to walk in the am but too d---hot in Florida right now.  When we met we grabbed hands and just started walking and that was 11 years ago.  We've walked all over the world!!  Before the heat arrived I would walk in the am and then he and I would walk when the sun went down.  We just moved so walking at night to a beautiful Fl beach is a dream come true for both of us.

Hey, where are all my online walking buddies?  There have been fewer and fewer postings.  Hope you are not giving up

I'm still here...I noticed too that there seems to be fewer posts.  Maybe everyone is just too busy enjoying their fall walks ;o)
