Week 5: Try a New Workout

While cardio and core conditioning may be mainstays of traditional exercise, gyms and fitness centers across the country now offer a wide variety of classes that will help you get into shape. For example, yoga combines meditation and relaxation practices to help you relieve stress while toning and strengthening your body. Other exercises like cardio kickboxing will give you a full-body workout by combining aerobic exercise, like kicking and punching — which work your heart and burn calories — with toning moves to strengthen your upper body and give it more definition. Taking up a different class or starting a new exercise routine at the gym (or at home) will keep your workouts interesting and motivate you to stay active.

This Week’s Challenge:
Enroll in a new workout class at the gym, or try a new workout at home. If you’re exercising at home, you could rent a new workout DVD or switch up your usual activity choice; for example, instead of walking, take a hike (literally!) by hitting a local trail. Have you tried Pilates? Zumba? Spinning? Take your fitness routine to the next level and challenge your body in different ways. Tell us what new DVD or exercise you tried. Did you have fun? How did it work your body differently? Is it something you’d like to do again? Share your new workout experience here.

We hope you all had fun getting your family and friends involved as you prepared a healthy meal and created some new memories for yourself.

The winner of last week's challenge is FoodFighter, who, along with her husband, prepared a nice casserole. We're glad you could enjoy this meal together--especially since that's not always the case!

FoodFighter will receive a copy of The South Beach Diet Supercharged or a cookbook of her choice!

We're In Training!

Hubby and I are in training for a trip to Disney World in March! Woo hoo! The last time we were there we were on our honeymoon in 1974! We were young and spry and able to walk and ride all day long and had so much fun. A few weeks ago he said that he'd like to take our three grown sons and our 3 grandchildren (ages 2, 5 & 8) to Disney World. My first thought was Oh No! I'll never be able to walk that much much less be able to ride all of those rides!

We haven't been to an amusement park since that trip - mostly because we lived out in the boonies where it'd be a long drive to get to one. Life got in the way, then when the kids were little and we were closer to 6 Flags or King's Island or Busche Gardens we just flat out didn't have the money to go. So now, we are planning a trip with all of the kiddies and I want to be in shape to ride baby ride and have a great time with the kids.

This challenge comes at a perfect time! I started a little early (Last Friday) and am now walking daily around our community track. 2 1/2 laps equal 1 mile. I stretch and I've learned that it takes me 1 full lap around it to get my muscles warmed up! My shins are pretty sore so I rubbed them down with some lotion. I get shin splints if I walk too fast to start out with. I spend a lot of time looking at my husbands back when we walk together as he can way outwalk me! (and he's got congestive heart failure!)

This week I'm working on 3 things:
1.) Walking 1 mile
2.) "Dancing to the Oldies" with Richard Simmons
3.)I'm going to attempt to do the "30 Day Shred" with Jillian Michaels IF I'm not already too sore from the other stuff. :)

I can't wait to see what everyone else does this week so I can get some new ideas!

Good Luck!

Vicki

Not a technical submission..... just a funny thing that goes along with the challenge.

This morning, I woke up to see what the winning submission and new challenge are (had a HORRIBLE time trying to post last week).... I open it up and see excercise.... exercise?!? UGH.... I think exercise is my nemesis for sure! That being said, TheMilkMaid and I have been discussing this for a week or two about how we REALLY need to get on it as for the exercising. Of course though, we always have something better or more pressing to do instead.

So this evening my husband and I went to Wal-Mart to get him some lemon juice. When I pulled into the parking lot, I just parked at the first stall I saw instead of driving around for an hour waiting for a place to park next to the door. On our way out, my husband exclaimed "You may as well have parked in Guam, why did you do that?" So I told him the challenge this week to which he replied "OH!! well that will be easy for you since ANY exercise is new exercise!!"

I guess it goes without saying at this point, another great challenge which seems to be perfect for all of us! I can totally relate to the dread of exercise. We all can I'm sure. Lately, while I still workout at least 2 times per week it's been hard to stay committed.
I figured out last week that it's so hard to focus on multiple projects, for instance since we decided to do our updating to the house hubby and I have struggled to get into the gym. Typically we'd go at least 4 times per week. Now we're lucky to get 3. I feel like there is so little time in the day it's really hard to work 9 hours, drive 2 hours, go to the gym for an hour...back home to paint or whatever.
This week I decided to renew my committment to working out. I simply used to hate hate hate it. Now that its become part of my life, I don't hate it anymore. In fact, as I'm working-out I actually enjoy it. It's time to push myself a little harder now though. I've been trying to be able to run continuously without stopping and the fastest mile I can walk/run is about 17 minutes! In hubby's world that's dreadfully slow (he's a runner). This week I'd like to focus on shaving some time off of that. That's my goal.

Wow, Natalie, that's great!! Good for you.  I'm sure you'll reach your goal...you seem to have done SO well so far!!!!

I am on the same page as pretty much all of you! Exercise...ugh.  I know I have to do it, but I also dread the thought of it.  Especially now, the baby takes up so much of my time, not to mention taking care of everything else in my life, that there seems to be such little time. But you see, I love him SO much that I know I need to take better care of myself.  SBD was step number one, and this is step number 2.  I know a gym is not an option for me - I just don't have the money or the resources (someone to watch the baby) to keep up with even a couple times a week.  SO, here's what I'm going to do.  I've been thinking, on and off, about the Wii fit plus.  Anybody heard of it? Good things or bad? I have a friend who has one and I might see if I could try it out before buying it for myself.  That's a goal I have for myself.  I've tried videos in the past and just never stuck with it, so I think I may give this a try!!!

Thanks Toucan! I'm also glad you liked the frittata recipe : )

Before we joined the gym I used to work out at home. I have one of those mini-trampolines. They really are a FUN way to workout. I got mine at a sporting goods store for about $80. Along with that I got some of those resistance bands. 3 days a week you could do the mini-trampoline and 2 days strength training with the resistance bands.

On the trampoline you can follow a video or just put on some music and jump around. Jumping jacks, marching and jogging in place are all super fun when you're bouncing on the trampoline.

If you don't want the extra expense of purchasing a trampoline, you could also do circuit training where you alternate jogging in place, jumping jacks with weights. That burns TONS of calories.

Since, I can not afford to join a gym but have all these exercise videos at home, I thought I'd dust them off and become reaquainted with them. At the moment I'm using "Walk Away the Pounds"  and "Walk the Pounds for Abs" series with Leslie Sansone...so, no matter the weather I can still work out.

I've had a small set back in the weight department this past week and gained back a pound. Discouraging really, after you have been working so hard...sticking to the weekly menus, etc. But, I won't give up...slow but steady.

I have that same DVD, I think that is a great idea to dust it off and get ready for winter.  Our winter was pretty cold last year and walking outside in the cold was difficult, a walking DVD is a must this year!!!  Thanks for reminding me I have them in the den.

Hello richard, i used to work out with my buddies after work then go out and have a couple of beers with mexican food. then go to work the next day and work on rooftops units all day and burn it off plus more burn off at gym.but when i got the news that i had lymphoma all that stopped and i went thru  treatment and now a year later i am obese. well i am a 100% good to go and i joined a new clean gym and i tell you it is like starting all over,i am doing the lightest weights and light cardio,i know its is not something new but it feels so good to workout again and without the fat mexican meals and heavey beer which i have recently learned is called liquid bread.lol. new look on life and really appriciate the gym and not take it like a hang out.also have a new workout buddy,my wife, God Bless!

I'm still trying to track down that Wii fit plus, and am anxiously awaiting so I can join this week's challenge.  Natalie, what a great idea.  Sounds like a fun way to exercise.  Thanks for the idea!!

So this week I've had a whole bunch of errands to run.  We're going away this weekend and well into next week and with that comes LOTS to do! This morning I woke up with a plan.  After I fed the baby, we were going to head out and get lots of things done! WELL...

My first stop was to head to Walgreens, which is about 3 miles away from my house.  I got little Bryan packed up into the car, the house all locked up, turned on the engine...and then turned off the ignition.

I took Bryan out of his carseat, took out the stroller, strapped on my most comfy sneaks, and decided to WALK instead!!! Let me tell you, that 3 miles there and 3 miles back felt AWESOME.  It was even okay that I didn't get as much done today as I'd hoped, because I accomplished a much larger goal for myself.  Six miles...I have to say, I haven't done that in quite some time.  Tomorrow I have a couple local errands to run, and I am planning on doing the same thing! I have to go to the bank and the dry cleaners, which are both within a few miles away, so there's my goal for tomorrow!

Good night everybody!

Way to go Samantha! 6 miles is quite a feat. Let us know how you do with your goals.

This week's challenge was just the wake-up I needed. I lost 1.8 pounds this week!!! That's the biggest drop I've had in weeks and I think it's because of the extra push I gave myself trying to lower my one mile speed.

Prior to this week my best time on a 1 mile run was over 17 minutes. Well I set my mind to it this week and on Tuesday I ran 14:45. Then last night I made another attempt and did 14:38. Let me tell you, that is REALLY difficult for me. I'm very proud that I was able to shave off over 3 minutes from my one mile speed but I still feel like I've got so far to go.

I'm not done trying, I will continue to lower my time; hopefull some day I'll get under 10 minutes per mile. It's very motivating to have a goal and it's making it easier and more fun to go to the gym.

(I hope this thread is fixed soon; its kind of lonely around here this week)

I am going to be in Long Beach, CA this next week. My firend told me we would be ririding bikes - yikes!  I have not been on a bike in about 14 years. Needless to say I am a little nervous. She let me know once your on the bike it will all come back to me.  So, I am counting this as my new workout. Grin.

I am pleased to say since I have signed up this board has kept me motivated and I ahave lost 10 lbs.

Looking forward to next week and finding out the new challange.

(just in case I turn up as guest again)

This week I was at a Case Manager's Education Conference and was able to take two Tai Chi classes.  Coach Sule has been a Master Trainer for 25 years and has been coaching a team of 6 contestants for the Atlanta's Biggest Loser-Mom's Edition.

I found Tai Chi to be challenging, you really had to listen and watch the trainer in order to do the moves.  We worked on Tai Chi fundamentals to include the basic physcial state and basic mental state.  Tai Chi can really help w/ posture, flexion and balance, along with improved mental outlook. I really liked the two classes that I had, but realize that I need to take more lessons in order to understand the fundamentals of Tai Chi and to do the Tai Chi on my own.   I heard a church close to me offers classes on Wednesday evenings--am going to look into it!!!

Well, I didn't go as far as DVD but like I said in a previous post that showed up as "guest", any exercise is new exercise for me!!

This week I did a few things to informally get back into the habit of physical activity.

  1. For starters, every time I went to the store, I made it a point to park as far away from the door as possible thus forcing myself to walk that extra distance.
  2. We did some pre-winter yard work (Themilkmaid and I) and were able to do it faster and more rigorous than we normally would with less breaks. We even managed to convince my husband to show us how to use the chainsaw for a bit of "resistance training"
  3. Made it a point to do things in motion.... bounce in place while cooking etc
I just felt like since I don't normally exercise these little things would help get that notion of movement back into the lifestyle and THIS week.... will do the same and add in some "real" exercise now that I have had the week to tell my body "it is completely okay to not be 100% sedentary"

I don't think it quite believes me yet.... but I'll get there! And hopefully the weigh in tomorrow will prove that even those small amounts of change will count for a few ounces!!

I am going to rent a DVD to try a strength training workout at home at least once this week and hopefully increase to twice per week next week.  Hope I can stick with it, strength training is my tough one as the gym in our town is at the opposite side of town and expensive.  I am going to try this at home and see if I can be successful.  Teresa
