Week 5: Watch Your Walking Form

At this point in the Walking Challenge, you most likely are feeling energized and look forward to your daily walks. To get more out of your workouts, try this posture check. Striding with the correct form will help you prevent injury, burn more calories, and walk longer. Here’s what to do:

  • When you’re walking, hold your abdominal muscles in tight, and consciously try to keep your belly from touching your waistband of your pants.
  • Keep your chest lifted and your chin parallel to the ground (believe it or not, leading with your chin while walking can result in neck and back pain).
  • With each step, strike the ground from heel to toe and feel your glutes contract.
  • Keep your body relaxed, and don’t stiffen up.

Let us know how you’re feeling right here in the boards, and help others correct their walking posture and get more out of their workouts, too.

Thanks for the reminder on proper walking form.  I think I pretty much follow that.  It does make a difference.  Hope everyone is doing well with their walking.

I've been walking forever and really haven't paid any attention to form but i will start doing the above.  Really just like to run out the door and walk, but can def see that posture can make a big difference.  Will try it this week.  I always feel good when I finish a walk-- it's the "get up and go" that sometimes slows me down!!!

Thanks for the tips. I knew about the heel -toe, but not the other suggestions. Concentrating on what your abdominal muscles are doing sounds like it will help with more overall toning. I like that idea since I tend to dislike ab exercises and rarely find time to fit them in to my routine.

I will try this today. I am finally feeling relief from my cough and congestion.

Wow I didn't think I would ever get my computer problems under control!  Sheesh..the frustration at times.  Well I have been thinking more about my posture.  I do tend to look down often because of my tendency to roll my ankles on stones and nuts laying around.  However, I have found that I can look out quite aways a head of me and see some of those dangers in the road before getting to them.  I do like to walk with my stomach tucked in.  It is something that my sister taught me years ago....I did have to chuckle with the comment about trying to suck your tummy in so that it was not on your belt...welllll...obviously you have not seen my tummy ;o) even though it is considerably smaller than last year, it is still a force that tries to resist tucking ;o)
All joking aside, proper stride and position is very important.  I do tend to be more successful losing inches when I tuck and stide.  I think I have even built my glutes up a little which is something I have never had before.   Well, friends....walk on and be safe.

Thank you for the tips on walking form, I did know about heel-toe, do keep my chest lifted/chin out, but was not holding my abdominal muscles in tight, will need to add this to my routine.  Will continue to work towards my goals, have increased my waling pace, have added time to my daily walk and will wok on my walking form.  Thank you for the walking tips!!!

Tonight when I was using the treadmill, I really took assessment of my form.  I thought I was lwaking with my stomach tucked in but I did wear a belt and realized that I was not tucking as much as I should have.  It also helped me straghten up my posture.  I always learn something to work on.

Richard,
What has happened to our group for this challenge?  It seemed like we started with a great group of supporters and now we are down to 9 posts????  I think this is a great challenge and at a great time of year because people tend to get busy this time of year and put exercise on the back burner.  I must admit that when I am forced to use my treadmill and Gazelle for exercise I don't tend to walk as far as I would if I was walking outside.   Well I hope everyone comes back soon.

Hi fall walking challengers!

Winter weather hit NE a little early this year. This whole week was cold!!!!!!!!! I kept my activity in the gym this week and hit the elliptical and treadmill for a total of 10 miles and 4 days working out. I'm hoping to get back to 5 days this week. The weather in MA is suppose to get back to a seasonable mid 60s for the majority of the week. It's suppose to be sunny too so I'm hoping to get out and enjoy the peek foliage around where I work and supplement this with trips to the gym. I'm trying to stay active the entire day by walking more at work (talking to people face to face instead of sending emails, or using the bathroom on a different floor and taking the stairs and taking short walks at lunch) So far it's kept my weightloss steady so I'm going to try to keep it up. Last week's weather took the wind out of my sails for lunch time walks but I tried to do all the other things.

I did watch my walking and elliptical form and tried to be more conscious of keeping my stomach pulled in. It actually helped me focus on something other than how long I'd been doing the exercise.

I hope everyone had a successful week!

You did have a successful week.  You must feel great about it.  I did quite well considering that I stayed late at school a couple of nights.  I did manage to come home and use my treadmill and Gazelle.   This morning my hubby and I decided rather than drive to town to go to breakfast, we would walk.  It ended up being 53 minutes of walking and 3.49 miles.  Friday night when I got home I was absolutely beat.  Luckily I wore my pedometer all day and had 6,000 steps so I just couldn't stop at that and decided that even though I was tired, I got on the treadmill and got the rest of those 4,000 steps to get my 10,000 daily goal.  I did make that 10,000 + goal 4 times last week.  I can't wait to hear what the next step of the challenge will be.  We have had cold weather too this week but, like you, in the Finger Lakes we are su[pposed to be back in the 60's this week.  I can't wait to get back outside to walk.
