Congradulations on your win (week 5 mini challenge).
It is wonderful to have your DH as your biggest supporter and your walking partner. My DH is my biggest supporter also. He actually had open heart surgery (triple bi-pass) 3 years ago in August. My DH was lucky in that he did not have a heart attack, they found the blockage early enough. So he has no heart damage. That was a life changing experience for both of us. He is 54 years old and he now acts like he is 30 again. I am trying to keep up to him. We are actually planning on doing a hike this week to the top of White Cap...I can't wait. Look for my post on Wednesday evening on the Beach Bunny thread, I hope the visability is good, I will take pictures and post them.
Keep up the good work, and enjoy your week.
Again Congradulations.

How lucky we are to have the support and encouragement we do. Glad your DH is doing well. My DH was only 46 when he had his heart attack (quadruple by-pass). At the time his heart surgeon said after the surgery that he had the heart of a twenty something - so I hear you when you say your husband acts like he is 30 again lol.
Can't wait to see your pics!
My DH's surgeon told him he had the heart of a 20 year old too...My husband was 52 when he had his surgery. I am glad your husband is doing well too.
Look for the post on Wednesday.

One of my favorite places to walk is the Southern Illinois University Campus. There are 12.4 miles of trails that go around and through this very large campus. Some of the trails are flat but most are a bit hilly and a few are up or down large hills. This is a very busy campus there seems to be someone driving by all of the time so even when you walk alone you never feel alone. There are campus police that patrol the area. It is for the most part nice and shaded by trees.
I keep my walks interesting by changing where I start my walk and where I finish my walks. I do get bored and on those days I drive a little further and park at a new spot and change my surroundings.
Walking outdoors to me is more of a challenge because there are no handles to hold on to as with a treadmill. No TV to watch and no one standing next to your exercise equipment interupting your workouts.
Walking outside with intervals is much easier to me. In the gym you are constantly changing the machine to get at a faster pace or more of an incline and decreasing again. Outside it is already done for you. The trail that I chose to walk has so straight paths, some that are a little hilly and some that are very hilly. A real nice mix up.

The very beginning of the walking/biking trail that is 10 minutes from my home.

I love this Historic log cabin that is right next to the trail........

Many bikers, joggers and walkers are on this trail. There seems to always be someone around. Maybe at the end of the semesters in the early winter it is not busy but that is about the only time that I have found.
When I want to take a quick short walk I park here it is very hilly and it is 1.2 miles total. Nice, quick, shaded walk. My Shih Tzu loves it here just right for a small dog. My boys and my dog join me here often.
Many times during the 12+ miles of trails there are different paths that you can take. I come to this trail most because I am familiar with it and it is close to home. One day I would like to find someone who loves to walk as much as I do and learn more of the trails.
This is one of the trails that lead into the campus.......

Although it is pretty here it is not the gardens at the campus. The gardens are kept by the students and the gardens are awesome.
Another view along the trails...........

This is the beginning of SIU.....it is a very large campus as you can probably tell by all of the miles it has around it.....
The campus buildings are to me quite large....
All in all this to me is a great place to walk lots of variety. The map of the trails show that there are 148.7 miles total to walk. Many cities are included in this mileage. Maybe one day I can find that person who loves to walk as much as I do and I can explore more than just my backyard.
Those trails look so pretty.
I have one trail here in Maine, it is only 1/2 mile long. So today in order to get 3 miles in at lunch, I had to cross it 6 times...It was the only shady spot I could think of at the time...it worked. I wish your trails were closer, I would explore them with you.
Thanks for sharing. Very pretty place to walk.

Let me start by saying that the ONLY place I walk to unless I HAVE to is the fridge. I am that person that drives around for hours to get two spots closer in the parking lot. Also, I live on the side of a mountain and my house is uphill from my work. But what the heck... always a good time to start, right?? Maybe not... here are some things I learned today...
1. Once a year Old Navy has a $1 flip flop sale, and once a year I buy 15 or so pairs in every color under the rainbow. Cute? Yep! Cheap? Yep! Comfortable? For general wear, yep again! The lesson: Just because they are cute, cheap and generally comfy does NOT mean you should attempt to walk in them 3.5 miles.
2. My mother once gave me a very ugly but very comfortable red knit, knee length sweater, it matches NOTHING but its soooo comfortable! This morning.... it just happened to match my red pair of Old Navy $1 flip flops, plus.. its cold at 5am when I get up for work and I think I already mentioned... super comfy sweater! The lesson: Just because it matches the Old Navy flip flops I shouldn't have been wearing in first place does NOT mean I should wear it in my attempt to walk 3.5 miles when its 80 degrees on my way home from work.
3. This morning I knew I would be walking home from work so instead of packing a lunch/water bottle etc, I took nothing but a cup of coffee in a disposable cup so I would not have to carry anything home on my trek. The lesson: Just because it is more convenient and seems like a good idea, does NOT mean that I should dehydrate and starve myself and then attempt to walk home 3.5 miles.
And the MOST important lesson I learned today is two-fold.
1. Probably would have been better to start small instead of trying to walk that far uphill without having NEVER walked that far in my life
2. My husband is amazing because I texted him when I left work to tell him I had started walking and he must have instinctively realized that today part one of this lesson was coming into play because about half way home he found me and picked me up!!
So.... I made it just under 2 miles, in around an hour... my feet are DYING, my lungs are mad at me, and my heart rate has still not gone to normal even though I have been home an hour but.... YAY!!! I walked!!!

Hopefully you will find an oasis some day too. Whatever you do just don't quit you have come so far.......Great pictures what an inspiration....Do you have a favorite board that you post too?

Alice shared her stories about her efforts to get walking, and chronicled how she overcame a brief illness to keep walking! She noted that the challenge has taught her that she can walk, and plans to do so in a nearby park. For her prize, Alice will receive a South Beach Diet cookbook of her choice. Congratulations!
