3 Steps to Achieve a Healthy Weight

So you've decided to work toward and maintain a healthy weight — now what? By following the South Beach Diet, you can succeed in achieving your goals. Here are three steps to get you on the path to weight-management success:

 

  1. Give your kitchen a makeover. Determine what foods should be kept and what should be thrown away or donated. You will also need to adjust your shopping list to fit your new lifestyle. You can find tips for both tasks on SouthBeachDiet.com.
  2. Incorporate exercise. Any amount of exercise is better than none at all. If you're just starting or returning to exercise, please consult your physician first — and take it slow in the beginning to prevent injury. Create a realistic exercise plan — you'll be more likely to stick with it. Dr. Arthur Agatston, preventive cardiologist and author of The South Beach Diet Supercharged, recommends 20 minutes of interval walking every other day, which means that you will alternate between short bursts of fast walking and periods of walking at a slower pace. With interval training, the higher the intensity of the exercise, the longer the afterburn; that is, you will continue to burn more fat and calories even while at rest! Ideally, on days when you are not doing interval walking, try to also fit in a 15- to 20-minute recreational walk when you have the time.
  3. Seek out support. Look to your friends and family for encouragement. They may want to join you on your path to wellness, and they can offer inspiration and motivation.
